Apple TV AirPort Extreme and ATV2

I have an AirPort Extreme and a Apple TV 2 with xbmc

I want to hook up external drive with all my movies to the USB port of the AirPort Extreme

I want to stream my movies with the computer off

My question is, do I need a nas external drive or would any regular external hardrive work ?

And what about a USB powered wd passport drive would that work ?
Can the AirPort Extreme power the USB drive
