This is a problem getting an AirPort Extreme to connect with a BT Home Hub. The point is to use the HH as a modem only, and the AP to generate the wifi.

I'm asking this for a friend, so there may be some delay in finding out any more information than is below. All the information I have is as follows:

Both the BT Home Hub 5 and the Mac Air Port Extreme 802.11ac are new. The HH is connecting to the web fine. The light on the front is blue, and he can log on to its wifi. He wants to use the AP instead. This is not working. The light is flashing amber.

The AP is connected to the HH with an Ethernet cable, WAN socket to red socket (which I think is the WAN socket on the HH). Running Airport Utility on an iMac, we set up a network on the AP. This can't connect to the HH, even though I've looked through several articles on forums (below) and set it up (I think!) correctly.

Airport Utility reports the following problems:
- PPPoE Server
- Internet connection

Both the AP and Internet indicators are orange in Airport Utility.

AIRPORT EXTREME CONFIG (from AirPort Utility)
=============================================
IP address: 0.0.0.1 - I presume this is because it's not connected, and not getting an IP address from the HH.

Far from here
Not sure because I do not know the BT Home Hub, but :

If the BT Home Hub acts as a modem, then you must set the Airport up as follows :

"Connect using" : DHCP or Static, not PPoE.

I would choose "Static", IP Address : 192.168.1.1

In AirPort utility:

Internet > Internet Connection >
Connect using: Ethernet
WAN port: Automatic
Connection sharing: Share a public IP address

Internet > TCP/IP
Using DHCP

If that does not work, I suggest going using the AirPort Utility simplified wizard to set it up.

You want the cable running from the LAN port on the Home Hub to the WAN port on the Extreme! You do not want the HH connected on its WAN to the Extreme...

You need to set the Airport Extreme in Bridge mode, Under the Tab labelled Network in the dropdown that says Router mode select "Off {Bridge mode}. That way the BT HH will do all the DHCP management. I am already doing what you are trying to do except that I have the two devices on different Floors and use a Power Line Adapter to connect the two units together..

I actually run two WIFI networks with different names one from the BT HH and a separate one from the Airport Extreme.

LAN to WAN. Not WAN to WAN. With the LAN being the router and the WAN being the down stream device.

The AEBS would need to be in BRIDGE MODE So that it is just following the BT lead.

I set the AirPort to bridge mode, and I had connected WAN port to WAN port.
