airport extreme card to BT Broadband?

Can anyone please help with:

1 - whether it is possible to get my i-mac with airport extreme card talking wireless to my BT Broadband 1800HG wireless hub?

2 - how I do this (in REAL simple terms)

3 - if I can do this what do I buy (and so assuming I need a new hub) then what do I buy.

Apple say I need to change my hub from pppoe to pppoa (???) and BT are bloody useless.

There's no reason why it shouldn't work: I've used AirPort cards with BT wireless routers before.

Open your web browser and type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar. If you're prompted for a username and password and don't know them, try admin/admin. That should give you access to your router's configuration manager, where you'll be able to change the encapsulation to PPPoA.

Edit: As AlBDamned points out below, you'll obviously need to do this with a wired connection! I also had to disable the security, if I remember correctly.

I've had a problem with this: A BT 1800G router and my Airport Extreme enabled Powerbook. Even though I had the correct WEP code, it refused to let me on the internet

I hardwired the PB with the ethernet to get into the router (192.168.1 or 192.168.1.1) and had to disable the security before I could get online wirelessely, (as said - even though I was tapping in the stock security code). Even when I changed the code to a custom one, it refused to accept it.

BT were a crock of SH*t when I spoke to them too: "Oh, well if that doesn't work (he'd told me where i could find the standard code - on the bottom of the router), then you'll have to call Apple." Duh.

KWMAC: Can you even see the router wirelessly with your iMac and Does the ethernet work?

The ether net connection is fine, though I am going through Safari as I cant get the sodding BT Broadband cd to load, but my mac wont wirelessly see the BT router.

I am a complete novice but I am guessing that I now have a broadband connection then I could get a new (& compatible) router. The airport express with airtunes looks good as I fancy getting i-tunes hooked up to the stereo, yes a cable would do that as well but I am DETERMINED to get this wireless connection working.

Go into the router via the ethernet and check the settings for wireless. It may be on a closed network setting or something.

Then, if it's on, take off security (just for the moment).

Then see if you can see it wirelessly.

That router is fine and quite powerful as a wireless hub so you don't need to buy another unless it's properly stuffed.

If you do any of this, don't forget to save each time.

If anyone finds this thread this is how I sorted this.

Click on the Airport Icon in the top right hand corner.
Select the 2wire248 option.
The password was $ followed by the 10 digit wireless encription number on the bottom of the 1800HG hub.

BINGO!!!!!

I cant believe after 2 days of umpteen phone calls it was this easy.
I got a BT number 08702 408053, got a Newcastle call centre and the guy had it sorted in 2 mins.

Right - so you hadn't read the basic instructions on airport or the router itself? Guess I should have asked that first.
