Airport Extreme

With Airport Extreme you run your DSL to modem then LAN to Airport Extreme, is this correct?

If so then is a standard wireless router a better option? what's the purpose of Airport Extreme?

Agreed, you need to do some research. To help you along, Airport Extreme is a router (both wired and wireless). It's primary purpose is to distribute and manage addresses to all connected computers and other equipment. Without it only the computer directly connected to the modem could access the internet without sharing...

It is totally up to you. When you look at the prices involved, you would probably pay an approximately equivalent amount of money for an Airport Extreme or the newest and greatest Netgear router than accepts a USB Readyshare and broadcasts at both 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz.



But...you have Apple service and warranty behind the Airport Extreme, and it is a neater, smaller package that obviously resembles your other Apple products. Whether or not that's worth anything to you is up to you.

A really neat option if you have several Apple machines in the house is the 1 TB and 2 TB Time Machine versions. You can set them to automatically backup your Macs, and you can use much larger network sharing partitions than you'd normally be able to use with a USB flash drive. The Time Machine versions are quite a bit more expensive than a regular router or the regular Airport Extreme, but the seamless integration of backups might be something that is worth it for you.

It's a neat enough idea that Dell are starting to copy the visual design and setup for some of its PC items.
