Hello all,

I'm about to purchase an AppleTV.

Is it necessary to have an Airport for the AppleTV to sync with my iMac?

The reason I ask is because it's not necessary to have an Airport for my laptop and my iMac to share information. Many times I've shared an internet connection from one to the other. Would it be necessary for an AppleTV and an iMac?

Thanks for the info!

You need an Airport for wireless syncing, but if you don't mind wired syncing any 10/100BASE-T router will work.

Ok. Thanks.

I'm a newb to the whole one computer talking to another. So, please pardon the ignorance.

Why is it possible for two computers to share an internet connection without an Airport, but the AppleTV can't sync without an Airport? To a complete novice, it looks like a connection is a connection.

Is syncing a different kind of connection than sharing internet?

Thanks again!

Both the appleTV and your iMac have Airport cards built into them. You don't need a separate Airport station for them to network wirelessly.

O.K. That's kinda what I thought.

Then I was confused since Apple's AppleTV webpage said one of the requirements for the AppleTV was an Airport basestation. Any idea why they would say that if it isn't necessarily true?

Thanks again!

It dosen't say it only works with Airport. It says in the system requirements:-

AirPort Extreme, Wi-Fi 802.11b, 802.11g, or 802.11n wireless network (wireless video streaming requires 802.11g or 802.11n) or 10/100BASE-T Ethernet network

The reason they put the Airport Extreme on the AppleTV's first page is because Apple are trying to get you to buy their over priced tat when in reality the ATV will work with any wired or wireless router/network.

Hey, there's a rumor that the appleTV might get updated soon - possibly even at that ipod event in early september, so you might wanna hold off buying until then. Just in case....

LOL they said the same thing last year when I purchased my ATV....we are still awaiting an update...But at least I have enjoyed the ATV for the past year...

Yeah, I went ahead and bought one. It does what I want it to do now, so I wasn't too concerned with a new one coming out next week.

One other question though, I noticed that content purchased through the iTunes store has to be "Authorized" when I first try to play in on the :apple:TV. Will every file I've purchased through the iTunes store have to be "Authorized" when I first try to play it on the :apple:TV, or will it only authorize the first one I try to play? I hope that makes sense.

Thanks to all who've helped out!

same here, I am in the market for a second one so I am hoping they release some new ones. I canceled my DirecTV subscription so I just use Over the air and the AppleTV.
