Hello helpful mindful mac people,

i have finally set up a dsl airport network, using an airport express and an airport extreme. i have them set up for wds. when i put on wireless security, say 128 bit, the macs get in just fine but the pc does not. it asks for a five character password, and i try it in 40 bit wep but then the whole network doesn't seem to work.

any suggestions?

thanks,
r.

The Airport uses a 128-bit key, but on your PC you try to enter a 40-bit one? This cannot work, you have to use the same kind of key.

yeah i know, i reset the airport to use a 40 bit wep key because for some reason ( i forget presently) the 128 bit hex key didn't work with the pc. (xp pro)

is there any reason why a pc wouldn't be able to use a 128 bit wep airport? a 40 bit airport?

thanks again!

I don't use WEP myself, but I've heard that you might have to put a $ sign in front of your WEP key in some circumstances. Try a MacRumors search for $ and see what you get.

Because the password your using is used by the Airport software you need to get the HEX password. Go into Airport Admin utility. Double click on your Airport Express unit. This will open a new window with all your preferences and etc. Their should now be a password tab in that window. This will display a HEX password to use on your PC.

I'm pretty sure this is whats wrong as I had troubles connecting my DS onday and had to use the HEX password.

Also their should be a Airport software for Windows. It should be included on the disc that came with the Express :)

I hope this helps :)

Edit: Although it may not work, but hey it's worth a shot :)
