Airport on Passive mode

Can someone tell me what this means? I was looking at this program (KisMAC) but I don't know what passive AirPort Extreme mode is. My real problem is the range of my airport card. Sometimes my classes are in underground classrooms and I don't get signal down there. Does anyone know of anything that I could do to strengthen my card's reception to get signal down there? Any apps? I'm using a pb G4 1.67 Ghz. Thanks
 
FWIW, barring some physical hacks to your system to add an external antenna - which might not work anyway - or buying an external WiFi device that connects via USB, there isn't much you can do.

Odds are that the signal is just too weak down there. Do other laptops get a good signal in the same rooms?
