Airport

I have just set up a network. Airport quits on me when my dual core iMac goes to sleep. I have to shut down and restart the iMac to get airport back up and running and recognizing the network and router attached to another computer.

Is this the way it is supposed to work? Does airport quit when the iMac screen saver comes on or it goes to sleep? Is it just because there is no activity for a long period of time?

Nope, that's not how it's supposed to work. When a screensaver activates, it should have no effect on the Airport connection. However, when it goes to sleep, the connection should drop and attempt to reconnect as soon as it is back on again.

There shouldn't be any restarting involved in the process. Are you running the latest version of Airport on your iMac?

BTW, specifically, what type of iMac are you using?

I am running a new Intel iMac with the built in airport.

It is connected to a Linksys router that is hard wired to an old white iMac.

I noticed that the screen saver does not seem to cut off airport, but when it goes to sleep it can't find the network and I need to shut down and turn off - just rebooting does not seem to work.

Maybe something is wrong with the airport card???

Is your wireless network broadcasting its SSID or is that hidden, and/or is there WEP/WPA enabled on your network? Your Mac should reconnect to the network automatically either way - but but those are just hunches. On my network, SSID broadcast is off and sometimes (rarely) my Mac will not remember the network, so maybe that's it.

In any case you should not have to reboot. If you haven't already, just enable the airport icon in the menu bar. (Applications --> Utilities --> Internet Connect --> AirPort --> Show AirPort status in menu bar). That will let you easily turn Airport on and off which should work to get you back on the network. It won't solve your problem, but it will make things a hell of a lot less annoying than having to reboot every time this happens.
