Tip of the hat to AkiTio for going nostalgic on the Thunder3 Quad X
https://www.akitio.com/desktop-storage/thunder3-quad-x

The design alone makes me want to buy it.

I wonder if it's backward compatible with Thunderbolt 2.

**Update** The tech specs states, "When connected to a Thunderbolt 2 computer via Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter or when connected behind another Thunderbolt device in a daisy chain, power delivery will not be supported."
[doublepost=1511402375][/doublepost]**Update 2**

Just received a response from AkiTio:

"Yes, the Thunder3 Quad X is backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 2. You will need macOS Sierra or above and the TB3 to TB2 adapter from Apple."

That is basically how I had to hook up my TB Lacie drives to the new iMac. I used the Apple USB-C to TB adapter. I will be looking for a USB-C enclosure to move my drives to native USB-C /TB3 enclosures.

Will likely order a Quad X this week. I like no hardware RAID controller so I can decide which types of RAID, now many drives per set, block size...etc. I can also use the 4th bay for a large TM backup drive.

I've received and have been running two Thunder3 Quad X via an adaptor on the 2013 MP.
I will have a full write up at the end of the month. In short, there were some initial hiccups but they disappeared after a reboot (2013 MP computer reboot). Overall, really easy installation (plug and play). Can't wait for the next MP with TB3.

Now if Apple would only do the new MP in an updated version of the old cheese grater silver cabinet that would match the Quad X. That would be cool. No more round trashcans that can not be expanded.

Did order one from B&H but they are out of stock until sometime in Feb. I think I will do a RAID 0 with WE Black drives for my library. That should give read/write times in the 400 range. Not as fast as an SSD....but much better that the 200 speed I get from my current RAID 0 with Seagate Cuda drives.

I may also put my TM drive into the 4th slot. All my eggs would be in one basket. ;)

Only 27W to charge laptops?

Design yuck ... why are so many Apple users still hooked on the G5/MacPro aluminum chassis design?

laptops? Those old things? I gave that up for an iPad Pro for the field and an iMac for the Desktop. Cheaper and faster than a MBP. The X design is a classic....unlike the Mac Pro trashcan.

The iPad is unfortunately not in my current budget - that said not happy about the minimal size increase for larger screen (10.5” vs 9.7”) but it’s a better machine. I just have no use for it beyond Playgrounds.

I’m not sold on the iMac at all. Read too many issues with internal screen during or the video card busting affecting external monitor. Yes this can happen to the MBP but it’s a LOT easier logging that on public transit to the Apple store ;)

If I want. Avery large screen - then I’ll go external from the 13” MBP which has always held a sweet spot for me in terms of portability and power vs any 15” especially now with eGPU capability at home.

I gave up on the Akitio Thunder3 Quad X that was out of stock everywhere. Today I ordered a WD My Book Duo to use in RAID 0 and a My Book single for TM backups. They will all be delivered Wednesday. Then I will remove all the LaCie Thunderbolt drives and put them on eBay.
