Are all of the 20" panels faulty?

24" seems a bit big, but I don't want the washed out colours, etc. that people are complaining about in the 20"s!

None of them are faulty. It's the characteristics of the TN panel that is used in the 20" iMac. Personaly, I think it looks great. I have one and I love it! What you need to do is see it in the flesh and judge for yourself. If you do end up getting one or you see one and it's all washed out, calibrate it first! I use the NTSC 1953 preset that i store from one of the iMacs I played with at the Apple store:D

Can someone post a before and after pic of this? I'd like to see proof that it is a legit fix...

Don't hold your breath waiting! There is absolutely no possibility of "fixing" a color or brightness gradient by calibration. Calibration affects each and every pixel on the screen EQUALLY -- it does not (cannot!) correct non-uniformities in an LCD panel.

BTW, there are hundreds of perfectly fine, beautifully uniform, and economical TN panels on the market -- and they've been there for years...

...but the 20" iMac doesn't happen to be one of 'em,

mine has that fading problem, but I can't really notice unless I watch a picture made of a single solid color. I'm not a professional graphic designer, I can pretty much live with this "feature".
 
I am thinking about getting my mom one. But I'm not sure now that people complain about the screen. I have a 17 inch HP notebook with a glossy screen and it's fine for me. Isn't it the same type of screen used in the 20 inch iMacs?

I really need some pictures because there is no Apple Store in my area.

Wow, that's unfortunate. Isn't there any electronics store that you can visit to see the computer? I'm saying it's unfortunate because you are taking the words of opinions on a forum as written law and making a decision sight unseen.
How do you think Dell makes money? They sell nothing but sight unseen. You will never see a true pic on the web as cameras don't show what your eyes see on a computer monitor.
Just buy and enjoy.
You've read a few complaints but how many have you read stated that they got refunds? I have read one out of 10 that refunded.

Keep in mind that people with good experiences don't take the time to post. It's the same as a retail store. If people like it they don't take the time to tell the manager how well their store is ran but a complainer???They will complain if they store employee's name tag isn't straight.
 
My iMac is 100% perfect - the screen is clear and sharp + perfect for photos. The DVD player is great + the sound clear. The only mistake I made, perhaps, is getting the basic model, when maybe the 2.4 20 inch would've been wiser, but I have 3 GB ram in this and it's fast whatever it does. I would certainly not go along with people who say every screen has the same issue, as mine patently does not have that problem.

No problem, bro -- I already had the photos (I returned the 20" a week ago and replaced it with a 24"). I've been meaning to setup a PicasaWeb account, and your question gave me the excuse to finally do it. ...thank you.

BTW, many (all?) of the 24" iMacs also have a very irritating (left-to-right) brightness gradient problem -- but not the washed-out colors of the 20". See the "LISTEN UP" thread for more on that subject.

This annoys me. I got rid of my 2007 iMac for various little 'niggles' I had, and now I can't decide if I want another with a 'cheap' screen or just rebuy a Mac Mini and hook it back up to my UltraSharp Dell 20" monitor!
