I decided that insted of reading this forum that I should go out and read some reviews from various places to an idea of what people think of the new iMac. Being a future iMac owner, I was getting quite afraid of buying one.
First up was CNet. Out of 63 reviews, two mentions (one of them could be debatable) of the infamous crashing problem. Another talks of it, but then goes on to say that they've never owned the unit. Only real complains are the glossy screen.
Next I went to Amazon. Forty nine reviews. This time just one mention of the crashing and a few complaints about the screen.
Last was BestBuy. Forty nine reviews when adding up the first three systems. Not one single mention of any crashing or video problems. One again, one complaint about the screen.
Out of 161 units, only three had problems (still, a better sample size would be nice). That means that there's a 1.9% chance of getting a bad unit. Counting the fact that online reviews tend to attract criticism, that's quite good.
Apple ships thousands and thousands of these units every day, and only a dozen or two complaints seem to pop up on the Internet in the same time period. One here, a few on the offical Apple forums, another somewhere else.
So while the problem does exist and needs to be fix, it's nothing like it's being made out to be at all. If your looking to buy a iMac soon, the odds are very good that you'll get a good unit. 98.1% chance from what the data above tells.
