Can the album art only be purchased through itunes or can it be retreived elsewhere? Not sure if what I am asking is wrong, but feel free to guide me to the semi-correct, least expensive method.

Soooooo uh, anything that might have accidentally fallen into itunes, Ala Limewire, how would I get cover art for that?

Do this.

In iTunes, select all of the album, right click > more info.

Go to amazon.com, find the album you want, drag the cover onto the album section in iTunes > more info. Make sure it is checked, and accept it.

Bam, got free covers, easy and assigned quickly!

Ok, my iphone is a couple weeks away, so been preparing for it. So I have an iphone playlist I am working on in itunes. My question is, when I synce this playlist up, will it tie the same artists together and just have the different songs for that one artist, or will it just download it the way it shows in my playlist screen?

Second question: I thanks to the poster above, I now know how to get art tied to a song/artist. If I have two or three songs from the same artist, artwork in every file, what is going to happen. Will itunes/iphone auto sync the same artist together as one leaving multiple songs but with only one cover art. I am new to all this but am a quick learner. Thanks for any help or advice.

If iTunes recognizes different songs by an artist as being in one album, then it will display one album's cover art in cover flow.

Great tip.

Simple and it works.

Thanks!

you google the album title, when you find the image you want you 'copy image' then play the song in iTunes and right click in the white box where the art is supposed to be shown (under the playlists) right click and 'paste'. Instant album art.

easier way, in itunes...

just right click on the song and click "Get Album Artwork" or whatever it's called. boom, simple (as long as Apple has that song in it's store).

You do have to have the Artist and Album labeled correctly though, or it wont find anything.

This is all I do as well, as long as you have the info correct it will dl the art regardless of where you got the songs from.

What a great trick. THANKS

Keep in mind doing it this way does not store the album art in the mp3 file itself, instead it stores it in an itunes proprietary format in the "album art" folder of iTunes. This is good in a way, to keep the file sizes down, and it usually gets good quality hi-res cover art.

But I like keeping the album art embedded in the file, so wherever I transfer the file, I will never have to find the art for it. So what I do is this: I select a whole album, right click and "Get Album Art", I then drag that artwork from the iTunes window (bottom left) to the desktop. This creates a copy of the art on the desktop. I then right click on the selected album again, but this time I choose "Clear downloaded artwork". I then use the "More info" method, and drag the copy of the high-res artwork from the desktop into the artwork window. This then embeds them into the file.

The above method will result in bigger files, which I know for an iPhone is not ideal, but at least I know the art travels with the file.

There is a great free app called ieatbrainz that will correct mp3's, aac's files that have incorrect or missing meta information, and then uses the sound of each song to match it with the correct information maintained in the MusicBrainz Database. It works very well and can save you a lot of time if you have a large collection with incorrect tags.

Also another app that I really like is Synergy it is an iTunes add-on that gives you menu bar control as well as other functionality. It also will fetch, embed and display album art, big plus. It's shareware.

Finally there is a dashboard widget called Harmonic that will fetch song lyrics in the background while you listen to iTunes. I have about 7000 songs and 95% have lyrics, album art and the correct meta info thanks to these three.

Good suggestion. One other native iTunes method to start is to select all the songs in the library, right-click, and "Get Album Artwork." It will retrieve a large percentage of album art - even for non-iTunes files (.mp3s). Once you have done that, picking up the rest can be done with any one of the tips above.

How about this...some artwork that is not available on iTunes (like Tool) I grabbed from Amazon. Looks fine on iTunes. But on my iPhone I get the whole "music icon artwork not on iPhone" image.

Any idea what is up with that?
