Okay. So this is a slightly different album art issue than what seems to be the most common ones I have found when I searched the forum.

Around mid-february, I started having some problems with my 160GB iPod (firmware and iTunes was/is kept fully up to date). Any new music that I put on the iPod would show up with album art under coverflow or when playing the song(s) itself, however, when browsing from Music>Artist>Albums on my iPod, I get the default image on the left hand side instead of each of the album's artwork. Frustrating, because for me, display of the album artwork is something I want to see as much of as possible (one of the reasons for my 1/2 year Zune stint, though that cheap PoS flat out broke on me).

So what I did last night, just made things worse. Note that I sync my iPod in manual mode (because my music collection doesn't fit on my laptop's hard drive and is kept on a separate USB HD that is not always connected cause it's usually connected to my Xbox).

First I tried to turn on and then off album artwork in iTunes and sync (I had found that solution in my google searches). Not only did that not work, but I would get an "error (-50)" during the final sync. As a result half of my collections art was gone, coverflow and all. So before I went to bed last night, I deleted all the music off of my iPod and put it all back on. All my coverflow art is back, but now EVERY album I have is missing artwork when browsing from Music>Artist>Album (or Music>Album). What is up with this? Anyone know?

I'm really trying to avoid restoring the iPod. The amount of backing up that will have to be done will be kinda long and difficult. Also, considering that I have only had my iPod for about 5 months now it seems like this could be a reoccuring problem, and I was hoping that perhaps someone out there had the same problem and found the solution.

(Note that I think when the problem first manifested itself, I had just either updated iTunes or the firmware, however I have updated iTunes again since this problem started.)

Hmm well if you put it that way. But I believe if nothing works, the best way to solve it would be to restore it. Yes it would be a hassle, but do you want to fix the problem or not? If then the problem still persists, go to an Apple store.
