Hello, I have 1200 songs in my itunes library almost 3/4rth of them dont have album art. I also have a copy of the mp3 files on my computer. When i manually add album art work to a song in itunes it does not copy the album art to the original mp3. So when i readd the original mp3 there will be no album art in it. I would like to know how to add album art to the mp3 so i dont have to readd the art every time i put it in itunes.

A few questions for you.
One, are you on a PC? Do you use only iTunes as your music player/music organizer?
If yes on question 2, you would just right click on the song(s) that you want to add the album art to, and double click on "album Art" and then add whatever file you want. If you don't use iTunes as your music player/organizer, than i don't know...

If you're on a Mac, use this Apple Script:

That will embed it into the original file. Follow the instructions on that page for how to install.
I have a mac. I tried the script but it doesn't work. My original files are in a folder under my Music folder. They are not in the iTunes folder.
In your iTunes preferences, do you have either of these two boxes checked?
BOth of the boxes are checked. In the corner of itunes i have a box that say "dop album art here" and from google images i drag and drop.
With the second box checked, iTunes makes a copy of any music you import. It's possible the mp3 file where you're looking for the artwork is the original, not the copy that iTunes made and manages.
When I add artwork to an album, I select all the songs in the album, then right-click and "Get Info". In the window that pops up, I drag the artwork to the box labeled "Artwork".
That adds the artwork to all the songs in the album, as well as the mp3 files. I know that when you download artwork from iTunes, it puts that artwork in a folder, rather than adding it to the individual files. I'm guessing it does the same thing when you manually add artwork with the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder..." option checked.

Lets say i have a mp3 on my desktop that has no album art work. After i import it Itunes makes another mp3 in its Itunes Folder. I then add ablum art work and it adds it to the song in itunes plus the mp3 itunes put in its folder. It did not add art to the mp3 on my desktop.
iTunes is working as designed. When you allow iTunes to make a copy of the mp3 for iTunes to manage, after the copy is made, the original mp3 on your desktop can be deleted, since iTunes is no longer using it. iTunes will not add artwork or tag changes to the file on your desktop. It only manages the copy it made.
If you want iTunes to use the mp3 on your desktop instead of making a copy, then uncheck that option and manage the naming and location of the files yourself. For me, I prefer managing my own files, since I don't like the method iTunes uses.
Wow You solved my problem! If i uncheck that box it does exactly what i want it to do. It adds the art to the desktop mp3! Is there a way to delete the itunes library made mp3 and still keep my songs in itunes the way they are?
No, you'd have to delete (from your library) and re-import all your music again, this time without that checked.
Ok thanks you so much everyone! When i add an album art to a song itunes adds the art to another song with the same artist for some reason. How can i get itunes to have different art for each song with same artist?
When you manually add artwork, iTunes will only add that artwork to the songs that you select. However, you need to understand how iTunes displays album art. If you have an album (iTunes definition of an album is a collection of songs where Album and the Album Artist are the same for each song), iTunes displays album art for Cover Flow and other views based on the album art of the first song in the album. For example, if you have an album with 10 tracks, iTunes displays the art from Track 1 as the album art, even if you have different artwork in each track. If there is no album art in Track 1, it uses Track 2, etc.
If you want different artwork for individual songs, such as singles, make sure they have unique information in the Album tag.
The way I choose to do this is I have all the Beatles albums in my library, along with the artwork for each album, which appears in each song of every album. I also have some Beatles songs that were never part of any album. For those, I don't want unique artwork. All my non-album songs from all artists have "Various Artists" in the Album Artist field and nothing in the Album field. I then have one custom-made album cover for all these non-album songs, so they only appear as one album in Cover Flow.
