i have an 'archived work' external drive, and occasionally work on a project from that drive. i usually put an alias to the needed folder on my desktop... just easy access.

but this means: making an alias of the folder (again, on the external drive), copying that alias to the desktop... then deleting the alias on the external.

is there a way to drag a folder from another drive to the desktop to make JUST an alias? (ie the way dragging from the applications folder does that)?

Drag the folder that you will be using into your dock. When you are done, drag the icon out of your dock.
(I also like the Option-Command drag, but using the dock bypasses that step of making an alias first)
(Yeah, I know not everyone uses the dock, but it's another option for you...)

Missed that! Option-Command drag seems like the simplest solution. (I confess to not always looking for the simplest answer  )
