Alias?

Quite new to an Imac, and I find this forum so helpful.

I have a 1TB drive attached which I use for extra backup, (i have a smaller drive set on time machine)

I regularly back up using SilverKeeper onto the TB drive, and I also copy files to it into a file I have named "home" Within this file I have other files, with various names and contents.

I went to save something this afternoon to "home", and I got a message "The Alias Home cannot be opened, because the original cannot be found"

What has happened? What is an alias? have I lost all the data saved?

The drive was previously formatted for use on the Mac.

Any help would be most appreciated!!

So you came from the Windows world. Well think of an Alias and a Shortcut on windows. It is just a pointer to something in someplace. If you move that something you made a Alias for then that Alias will be looking for that something back in the orginal place. So you will have to make another Alias to that something (where that something is in a new location).

So a Windows shortcut is a copy of Macs Alias. They are roughly the same kind of pointer file.
