err... I accidentally dragged from the title bar of a window w/ documents open onto my desktop. Now I have a documents folder on the desktop.. and i'm not sure if it's an alias... or what.. I can trash it without losing all my files right?...

NO! At least, not likely. When you drag the icon from the title bar onto the desktop, it moves the folder there. I would suggest moving it back to where it was.

there are several ways to verify whether or not it's an alias or whether you dragged the actual folder to the desktop

does the icon of the folder on the desktop have the word "alias" as part of it's name? is there a little arrow on the icon? if you press "apple key + i" it will tell you if it's an alias (shown at "kind" under "general")

if it's an alias, then you can trash it.....but make sure you didn't drag the original of the folder to the desktop before you trash it

ah... good thing I checked... so where does the documents folder normally go anyways? under my user directory?

Yes. That means it'll be /Macintosh HD/Users/(your login name here)/Documents because /Macintosh HD/Users/(your login name here) is your home folder (the one with the house icon).
