This seems like a big missed opportunity. For something so expensive, would’ve been a nice enticement to get just the combo you want.

Looking at how far the shipping times slip once they move past early January, I'm guessing there are some significant production limitations for now that keep this from being feasible. Wouldn't be surprised if they do something like this later...

Kinda like how you always had to get an Apple Watch (most models anyways) with the black band up until recently, always had to buy other bands as an additional cost rather than being able to create your own watch / band bundle.

Didn't they trademark AirPods Studio? Could be they're saving that nomenclature for a buying option like the Watch Studio, once inventory stabilizes.

I bought space gray.. I really wish they made a silver band and black cups options. I was torn between the “white” and “black” ones. I always wish they would make original AirPods in black. But I honestly feel the white looks sleek. I think over the ear black ones will be fine though

This combination in particular is truly a missed opportunity.

And, considering how these don't have a wire, aren't reversible and have their Left/Right markings weaved deep in the protective mesh, I'm not even being ironic here… They would look uglier, sure, but indeed be more usable from an ergonomics/UX standpoint. Especially in a studio or in an office setting, where wires and such standard colour coding are the norm, like on my fugly but dependable KRK studio monitor headphones.

In any case, you could always have a black pair for using them in public if you found this combination too ridiculous. That's the beauty of it, and I'm guessing Apple will sell quite a few of these even without the option for the mostly “mismatched pair of socks” look.

Or you could just wait for Gen. 2. Apple has been constantly pivoting on their anodized finishes from pastel/muted to vibrant colours and back again, ever since the 1st Gen. iPod Mini.

Why can't Apple just give us this industrial Mac Pro look in their mobile products? The Mac Pro is the best looking apple product currently in production. The keyboard and mouse are equally impressive. The combination of Black, Silver Aluminum, and Stainless Steel is truly special. I want more of it!

This is the best combination so far. I wish it was possible to change the mesh band :/

This is unfortunately not possible, because you can only change the pads and not the top mesh.

I don't disagree with your logic, but on a point of accuracy I distinctly remember choosing the watch and band combo I wanted in the Apple Store the day they launched "try on" sessions for the S0.

I don't remember if if I had carte blanche to have any combo with the silver stainless one I chose, or if it was more heavily restricted. I do know the black link bracelet was only available with the black stainless watch, but that may have been the only limitation. I don't remember when the norm became only standard combos that we had until the Studio launched - it may well have been right after the silliness of the way the launch was handled quietly ended - but at launch we definitely got choices not being offered with AirPods Max.

Of course nowadays Covid pretty much nixes the possibility of try on sessions almost everywhere - ironically here in NZ we could do it - if we had any physical Apple Stores...
