of icloud on the mac and iphone ... even the downloaded ( not purchased) music .
1) even if i have downloaded some songs, do i have to be signed in to apple to play them?
2) to play them, do i still need to have an internet connection, if not for streaming then just to stay signed in?
3) in other words, if i'm on a long drive and DONT have a cellular connection ( or if i'm on a flight) , how do i listen to my downloaded (not purchased) music? seems like i'm missing something here, it kind of defeats the purpose of downloading music if i have to be logged in and connected to listen to it.
any clarity would be most appreciated.
iphone 7, itunes 12, apple music subscriber, most all music downloaded from apple radio, vary few songs purchased from itunes.

You need to stay signed in. You can download any Playlist or tracks to listen to off line.

You don't actually need an physical connection.. iTunes and Music app on iOS just need to know after you downloaded Apple music songs u have not signed out recently. Apple does that to confirm eligibility of playback.
