Hello!

I have been having a very frustrating issues with my internet browsing. It's been extremely slow. I'll try to explain thoroughly.

Firstly, I am on a 13-inch, Mid-2010 MacBook Pro, running 10.11.6. I upgraded to a solid state drive a little over a year ago, which made my computer run like new.

The internet issue started the day after I had made some changes to my internet. The next day my browsing began acting very slow. Taking minutes to load pages. One of my roommates started experiencing the same thing. But two other of my roommates were not. Their browsing is fine. The rest of my programs seem to be running fine. Also, my phone is running fine on the Wi-Fi.

What I Tried That Day:
We did the classic router bounce. I checked my network and nothing looks weird. I cleared the history in safari, chrome, and Mozilla. I even uninstalled Chrome and Mozilla and reinstalled the most recent version of Chrome. I selected "Use hardware acceleration when available" in Chrome's advanced settings. I deleted the network and reconnected to it. I repaired the disk. Checked for malware. Restarted my computer multiple times. No improvements.

This is where it's gets very frustrating. After that day, I went to someone else's house, got on their Wi-Fi and still no improvement. After that I went to my workplace and hardwired in thinking that it would be the fastest internet that I have access to. Still, no improvement. I thought that maybe it was a hardware issue but, I ruled that out since the Ethernet did not work either.

I've tried just about every solution on the internet that I could find, but nothing has helped.

They weird thing is, after not using my Macbook for a few weeks and just using my iMac which is working fine, I started it back up, and the internet ran great for about 1 minute, then went back to being slow.

My roommate who is still experiencing the same thing, has a 2015 iMac. He has applecare and insurance, so he took his computer back to the apple store and is having them try to fix it. We are still waiting for the computer to come back to see if they were able to fix it.

The only thing I haven't tried, that I can think of, is to use my time machine back up and go back to before the issue started to see if it helps.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

As we say in flying. When something goes bad, undo what you just did.

It sounds like your change to network connection messed things up if both macs are slow. Undo that change.

BTW, remember things like DHCP setting are cached for 3 days. So maybe your other roommates have not yet been effected.

On other people's Wi-Fi I am still having the same issues which I never had before. Right now, I am at another location on someone else's Wi-Fi and it's still EXTREMELY slow on my MacBook. I am typing this on my phone, which is running great over the Wi-Fi. And even being connected through ethernet at work on my MacBook, it's just as slow.

OP:
Try this (may or may not help):

Go to the "users and groups" preference pane, and create an ENTIRELY NEW "temporary test" account.

Give it administrative privileges, and an easy-to-remember name and password (such as "temp").

Now, log out of your "regular" account, and log into the new "temp" account.

Open up Safari, and browse around.
How does it go?
Faster, slower... how does it go?

Get back to us with your results.

Note:
DON'T import anything into the temp account. You WANT it to be "bare bones", with no add-ons from 3rd party software.

IF the temp account runs "normally", this would indicate that SOMETHING in your regular account is mucking things up. I'd suspect Chrome, myself.

If there is no difference with the temp account -- that is to say, if things are still on the slow side -- it points to something "external of" your regular account.
More likely "at the system level", or perhaps even external to the Mac and at your LAN level.

Hey Fishrrman,

This didn't seem to help. Thanks for the suggestion though. Browsing in Safari is still slow. But I want to remind you that this problems ensues on all Wi-Fi that I use, at my house or at any other location. So I'm 90% positive it's a computer issue. My phone, which I'm on right now, browses just fine on my home Wi-Fi, and other people's Wi-Fi.

You 'made some changes to your internet'? What does that mean.
Hey Robvas,

Thanks for chiming in. We changed the account holders name, and the modem. BUT PLEASE KNOW THAT the slow browsing happens on ALL WI-FI. Not just mine at home.
