All my contacts are gone

I just got my iPhone 4S today and got home from work and synced my phone and none of my contacts came back. I setup iCloud the night before on my mac. Any ideas???

Make sure that the Contacts are set to sync in the iCloud settings.

Happened to me too about an hour ago.

I went into the iCloud settings and toggled contacts on and off....then I said screw it and turned it off...

I'll keep it synced to my macbook like it always was. Never lost contacts that way...

yeah I turned it off and selected sync contacts and still all gone.

I had the same problem. The contacts were all there, I just couldn't see them. I knew because all my texts had names, not numbers. And I could type in a name and it would recognize it.

I think re-syncing is the best solution. That fixed my music and videos and so on. But there is a shortcut that worked for me until I could re-sync. Go to Settings -> Mail, Contact, Calendars. Scroll down to the Contacts section and click on your name in My Info. That brought up my full contact list. And they stayed even after exiting. Everything was fine after that.

When upgrading to iOS 5 on my iPhone 4 it was not long before I noticed that my contact list was empty as well. My contacts were still in the phone just not showing up in the contacts list as I was able to bring up the contact information for my brother for instance by displaying one of his text messages and pressing the "Contact->" button in the top right corner of the text message window. All the information was there that should have been. Decided to make an edit to the contact information. When returning to my contact list at that point I was pleasantly suprised to see that all of my contacts were once again present.
