all my email messages gone!

So I go to access my email today and I see the the spinning wheel on mail.app. Eventually life returns and I see no emails. I log on through the web, same thing.

CRAP, I'm wicked pissed off.

I need to contact apple, and see what happened and what my recourse can be.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Did you install or change anything in the last day that might have caused this?

If so, go back in Time Machine to the previous day before the issue...assuming you have backed up and all will be well, as long as you don't change the same thing again and end up in the same predicament.

If you didn't back up, you may not have any ability to get the emails back...maybe with a disk recovery program perhaps?

Speak to Apple but if they are messing with stuff behind the scenes you may find that your emails will simply reappear (hopefully).

Nothing was updated, changed or installed. I was in there yesterday, shut my computer down for the night. Started it up this morning and poof

I don't see how TM backup is going to save me since my mobile me email messages are on apple's servers?

Mail would still have a copy of all of your messages from the backup two days ago. You don't download all of your messages from the cloud each and every time you go into Mail. They reside on your drive.

I wasn't sure how much of emails were on my local drive vs. the "cloud"

In any event, my emails have re-appeared. Not sure exactly what occurred but just as I got connected to applecare I rechecked my emails and they're back.

whew, I can breath a sigh of relief.

Glad you got your e mails back

This happened to me a month ago. I was travelling on the train and all of my e mails disappeared from my iPad and iPhone. Luckily I didn't have my Macbook Air with me at the time.

I contacted Apple who tried to initiate a recovery process. They managed to recover about a fifth of the e mails I lost. I had no explanation regarding what happened, and was simply told not to keep my e mails on their servers and to have a local copy instead.

Mobile me is not a cheap service, and quite frankly I expected more reliability. This experience has definitely taught me not to trust Apple with my music collection when they launch their iCloud service.

Thankfully, through the help of some macrumors forum posters, I was able to recover all of my e mails from my Macbook Air. I turned off my DSL router, opened the Macbook Air, archived everything, then turned the DSL service back on and popped everything back into mail.

I now make sure I have a local copy, which I renew every week or so

Agreed, I heard the same thing from others as well. Given that I'm shelling out 100 bucks I would expect apple to ensure the integrity and back up of my emails. I mean other free emails services have more stable email platform speaks volumes.

It's not the early days of .mac anymore, if it wasn't for the @mac e mail address, and the fact I still get random e mails through every so often that benefit me financially, I'd cancel the service. It's failed to offer value for money for some time now. For me at least

I too have an @mac email address but given the issues. I'm on the hunt for a domain name to use for an email address. I think it may be time for me to take responsibility for my emails. The problem there is inertia, its my appleid and itunes id. I think its going to be a pain to change over. First I have to find a domain name that works for me, not an easy thing given that most dictionary and two word domans are gone.

Absolutely. If I could take the domain name, for e mail purposes only, away with me. I'd switch in a heart beat

It's a real shame the service is so poor. The world has moved on, Apple has definitely adapted in many areas of it's business, but with MobileMe it's stagnated and gone backwards

Sent items ... vanished!

All of my sent items just vanished and syncing with MobileMe was a fail

But then they all reappeared about an hour later and Mail started re-syncing itself.

I wonder whether this has anything to do with testing for iCloud and they are messing around with servers?

I changed my appleid a few months ago and remember it being fairly painless. I was expecting the worst and was happy when the worst didn't happen.

That's good to know. Now I need to decide if I want a mac like domain name, I'm kind of liking mac128k or something more generic (which I don't have a clue as).

Given that I have 6 months left on my mobile me and presumably apple will be unveiling an updated iCloud/mobileme I have time to see if apple is going to rectify the situation. As it stands I'm not holding my breath.

MobileMe email messages can fail for many reasons. You need to ensure that all my rules MobileMe email messages are free of all instructions to delete messages in any condition. Search for text or record the issue of missing emails. Search across mailboxes to mail. Temporarily disabled MobileMe and try again.
