...if you go to your mac and bring up the About This Mac pane, is your startup disk shown?.

I thought these were only meant to come up if you have an extra HDD you use. Does a virtual drive count?

Parallels use what look like vertial hds stored in files not partitioned hds like you think

A virtual drive doesn't count, because as far as I can make out, it doesn't technically exist until parallels runs, until then it's only a file.
