Hello :apple: Users,



The reason i make this topic is because i see a lot of topics about different or combined problems about the iMac, so i thought i make one place were we gathering al the problems about the iMac.

I made a sort of easy checklist for the people who want to check their iMac, including me.



1 - Dead pixels.

2 - Gray-band issue: A grey (tinted?) band below the screen.

3 - Yellow screen: A unequal spreaded yellow tint over the screen, for example: The bottom of the screen looks far more ugly yellow than the rest of the screen.

4 - Buzzing/electrical crackling/whining/dog whistling/high pitch noise: A PSU problem. This gets louder if you dim the screen.

5 - Noisy/(clicking?) hard drive: This is particularly always a 1TB Seagate drive, you can also have the Western digital 1 TB this one is good. the 500GB an 2TB are quiet, no problems. The 2TB version is always a hitachi.

6 - bended stand/fingerprints/scratches: This can be happened everywhere before you got it. Or you did it?



Do you guys know anymore problems?

I heard(read) that there were problems with the audio jack and usb-ports or something? Am i missing something?

Have i it all listed correctly or did i make any mistakes?

If i buy a iMac or someone else wants a iMac, the most people want a flawless iMac. I dont want to spit thousands of threats before i know what to check for. (What i actually did, sadly)

I say it again: This is a checklist threat. Easy, but efficient for checking your iMac for stupid faults.
 
Sample of one: My brand new 2.93 i7 has none of those issues, and I have looked carefully.
 
I have been in this forum for some time. I am personally getting tired of hearing about all the flaws with IMAC. I was at my local Apple store this weekend and while there was an issue with the monitor at the beginning of the new release they haven't had one come back lately. A computer is like any other thing that is made in the world. Look at what Toyota went through, and their sales are still high. Their are a lot of internet companies that won't take a monitor back if it only has a certain amount of dead pixels. There are issues with all computers being made, just ask someone who owns a Dell.
With that being said I am looking forward to buying a IMAC 7 this week. If there is a problem I will bring it back and get it replaced. Try doing this when you buy a new car. I would rather see some substance in these forums and not just yellow screens etc. Keep in mind for every bad Apple there are thousands that are perfect. Sorry for the rant!
 
It's okay to have a list of all the known iMac problems on one thread. I just got my Mid-2010 i7 a few days ago and have a gradual yellow tint on the bottom third of the display. I'm struggling to convince myself not to return it for fear of getting something else instead (noisy hard drive, etc) and this list is a good reminder of other things that could be wrong with my current iMac but aren't, or what could be in store for me with a replacement iMac. My iMac was made in the USA; so much for those being flawless :(

The late 2009 imac 27 inch is known to be plagued with numerous issues, apple even halted shipments to adress some of the issues (poorly might i add). the loud clanking HDD, yellow screen, buzzing, not being able to boot from bootcamp with the option key on wireless keyboards, waking from sleep suddenly, spotlight constantly indexing, all these are many. not just a few isolated incidents. even people who have returned them to the apple store have had to do so more than once just in hopes they get one with a different model HDD. Sorry i understand all computers will have a few bugs at times but if we wanted a dell we would have paid $500 for a dell... not $2000 for a machine from a company that normaly holds quality control to a higher standard. thats part of the reason for the higher pricing... they are supposed to be less flawed, there is supposed to be more research/testing. the fact that apple is playing most of these problems down and saying they are "normal" is whats bugging most people. And ofcourse they are going to say one hasnt come back lately... they arent going to make one of their own products look bad, the majority of the store is sales. that and they arent letting people return for most of these issues. This original poster is trying to start a thread that may warn someone buying an imac of what to look for... so if you are tired of it im sorry, you obviously dont care about other members.
There is your substance. oh and by the way, apple will take an imac back for one (1) dead pixle. with that said, I shoud be able to return mine when it sounds like gremlins are trying to take my mac apart when it is idling... but they will not. (durham NC store)

Now.. in reply to the original post. yes i have another 3 issues to add with the imac 27inch core I5 (late 2009) radeon mobility 4850 HD.

Not being able to choose start up disk most of the time with the opt key on wireless aluminum keyboard. work around is to change start up disk manualy then restart (has to be done each time)

Video driver provided by latest version of bootcamp sometimes will not allow instal of windows. I had to go in CMD line in windows set up and delete the original driver, then replace it with the newest ati driver after set up.

Also issues with bluetooth (wireless) keyboard not being recognized in windows bootcamp. (especialy irritating if you bought from the apple store as you will automaticly get the wireless keyboard)

All these issues have been reported by other people, googling these issues will usually lead you to forums with help for work arounds if available. I did manage to get my video and bluetooth to function correctly.

All these issues that you and I have stated seem to only plague the late 2009 imac 27 inch with the I5-I7 cpus and radeon mobility 4850hd. the core2 duo version with the nvidia graphics seems to have made it out clean. if you have any other issues you would like confirmed please let me know and i will attempt to replicate them on my machine since i own one of these problematic Imacs. i think there is a newer release of the core series Imacs that may not suffer from these issues so purchasing a new Imac now shouldnt be an issue.

yeah it seems you got the newer release. i havent heard of these "problems:)" being associated with the new ones for 2010.
 
I hear what you are saying but once again there are thousands and thousands of mac computers out there in the world for personal use and the corporate world that are fine. The problem is that there are some inferior parts coming from overseas. May be people should go over to a Mercedes dealer and she what problems people are having with their $60,000 car!

But i think you are assuming that the OP started this thread to complain, they did not. they are makign a thread specific to imac buyers to help them be informed of what to look for. How many cars are having problems and how many macs arent having problems, and DELLs poor quality is not relevant to this thread nor does it tarnish the credability of this thread, nobody is saying there wont be issues, we are saying there CAN be some issues with this model and THESE are what you should be looking for. nobody is trying to take a stab at apple so stand down soldier. ;)
 
I got my iMac 27" (July build) and the machine has the following problems.

2 - Gray-band issue
3 - Yellow tint.
6 - bended stand
7 -fingerprints (inside the screen)

the local apple store should be able to resolve atleast the finger print issue rather easily and quickly. they use suction cups to remove the glass and clean the inside, then roll over it with a silicon roller and voila! the other issues bother me tho. i had really hoped apple had outgrown these problems after all the feedback they got from the 2009's
 
Some say it has a slow superdrive, that it has lightbleeding or IPS glow. All i know is that we call it an Imac!:D

I've had to return 2 machines the first had dead pixels and the second had bad light bleed in the lower right hand corner.

I'm just getting my money back and will wait and see if these problems improve as I dont want to go through returning another machine.

Im really disappointed as its a fantastic machine but i spent £2600 on it and I want it to be perfect.

The iMac is an overpriced and flawed computer.

You are better off with a PC. Too many problems with Apple computers.

To top it all off, they lie about their iPhone problems.

How can you trust a compnay like this?


For those who aren't aware, you can build a PC that is faster and performs better than a high end iMac and all for a lot less money.
 
I for one think the list is useful. So thanks to Snowcake.

My new 2010 i7 suffered from a variant of problem 4. One of the transformers was making a humming / droning sound where the frequency of the noise changed over a period of about a second. After putting up with it for a few days I was getting driven to distraction so arranged for it to be repaired under warranty.

The repairer confirmed the problem and arranged for the PSU to be replaced. As part of the repair they do a standard hardware check (something I'm ashamed to say I hadn't thought of doing) and this threw up errors with the graphics card. So now that's getting replaced too. Hopefully I'll get back a reliable machine with no other problems.

To be fair to Apple, whilst I've had a few problems with new purchases either being DOA or failing in the first few days, once any teething problems have been sorted I've found the kit to be pretty solid and reliable.

You're missing the one big, fat, giant elephant in the room. You'd have to use Windows!!!! No thanks...I can do without virus scans, spyware scans, registry errors, and bloatware (AOL 90-day risk free trial crap)...

Welcome Snowcake. The imac has had quality issue the last several years, the current problems are not rampant now, but issues still exist. The imac has a rep for being overpriced and under powered. That is true, but I will recommend the newer models. Be careful when shopping.
 
I have a close-to-perfect iMac...the only problem is that it has a slight yellow tinge. But it's really no big deal and I'm quite content with it. It's heaps and bounds faster than my Macbook, a gorgeous screen, :apple:fast wifi...etc...

The little yellow tinge adds tang to my iMac and gives it character...no piece of technology is ever gonna be perfect, that's just the way it is, and I'm extremely pleased with my purchase and I commend Apple for being able to create such a sleek and sexy machine...

My 27" i7 has no dead pixels.
Did some of the tests here and have no gray band issues or yellow screen.
Turned my monitor brightness up and down a bunch of times. No noise what so ever.
No clicking hard drive. I have the 2 TB Hitachi one.
No fingerprints, scratches or dust on the screen.

The iMac is flawless and I love it.

I as well should resist the troll but its people like this that remind me how NOT pathetic my life is. They should delete his info, and burn the Drive it was stored on ceremoniously while dancing in treasure troll wigs singing the ewok celebration song
