i can't believe many people are falling for this marketing...honestly i don't see what's the resemblance!

the iPad is the iPad
Macbook Air is a Macbook Air.

totally different machines with totally different softwares.however, i understand the uses for the iPad for some can be the same for the Air but that's it! all these thread with people selling their iPads are funny..

The iPad is a small portable device that produces little heat with a large battery and with 1 logic board and integrated flash based storage!

Traditional, laptops have been several components in a case that is noisey and hot and with poor battery life.

The MacBook Air internals are closer to that of an iPad than they are to a traditional laptop!

We can swap out the storage in the MBA something you won't ever be able to do on an iPad, it is really just a very slim laptop. It's also a 2 chip solution (processor/chipset) whereas the iPad is a SOC (system on a chip). The internals are quite different.

And the instant-on part is pure BS. My MacBook was as instant on as this thing. Heck, I've noticed lag on the Air when coming back from stand-by, something my MacBook had none of, it would always be ready after I had flipped the lid.

The stand-by time is quite phenomenal though.

As with most other marketing, don't take it personally.

Many people sold their iPads because the MBAs suite their needs better, others just want the latest and greatest shiny thing from apple. Others still prefer the iPad over the MBA.

I do think the MBA is cannibalizing iPad sales to some degree, just like the iPad ate into netbooks sales. As for totally different purposes, I disagree. Apple directed the iPad squarely at the netbook user and it worked. Now apple has a veritable netbook in the MBA and so its doing the opposite. Some people prefer keyboards and full a full OS, as opposed to iOS.

Different strokes for different folks, enjoy what you have and don't worry what others are doing.

The thing with the iPad is that we're seeing all the honeymooners and people who bought into the hype still in denial. While it might be useful for some people, there's quite a few buyers that didn't actually need such a limited device.

I think a lot of the "Air as a 2nd computer" buyers also fit in this category. They really don't need the Air (or they don't need their "bigger" computer), but like you say, "Apple shiny" takes over and they buy, never to admit they were wrong and just bought into the hype.

That's why it's always hard to judge the success of an Apple product in the few weeks following its release.

That is pretty much the case for me. iPad is nice. It has its own limitation. iPad is just a portable device that complimenting the laptop. I rather go with portable device with less limitation. Why limit yourself if you don't have to?

....learnt?

Huh?
Not everyone is from the USA. "Learnt" is an appropriate way to say "learned." (And vice-versa.)

To the point of the thread, I've been considering parting with my iPad in favor of my 11" MBA. There's a lot of functional overlap, and the advantages (for me) tend to flow in the MBA's direction with its keyboard and full-featured OS.

The jury is still out.

Do they erase posts without letting you know why on this forum?

Anyway, I think it's better not to say something IS, because others might not agree.
People can tell me their opinions, as I tell others, don't tell me your opinion IS.
You can tell me how you feel about something or what you think about something.

If you've fully read the forum rules, you should know why your posts are removed. The mods are not going to tell you why unless it's extremely serious.

About the rest of your post.....HUH????

The thread says 'All this...marketing IS pathetic'.

It just reads more open, friendly, when someone says it like this:
I think all this "what we learned from the iPad" marketing is pathetic.
or
Personally I believe this "what we learned from the iPad" marketing is pathetic.

Or as a question
'Who else thinks "what we learned from the iPad" marketing is pathetic?

You can tell me what your opinion is, but not in a way that your opinion is the only possibility.

The way it's put up now, is like saying everyone who thinks different is wrong or stupid.
That's the reason I've posted a response (which is removed) that said:
I think this thread is pathetic.
So it's really about the titel of this topic.
The way someone opens a topic, starts a thread, can make such a huge difference.

Is it pathetic that a company applies marketing? Is the starter of this topic, when he disagrees, going to start a thread somewhere on the internet, about every commercial out there?

Although he thinks it's BS, I can see why, in a way, they used it as one of their marketing points.

The difference is the poster who posted the thread qualified why he thought the marketing around the Air was pathetic, you didn't qualify why you thought the thread was. And you attacked the poster instead of the argument, that's a big no no as far as rules go around here.

So next time, post up why you think the original poster is wrong and offer counter arguments. Your post was devoid of any real content and was rather useless in this thread.

Also, questioning the moderators in public is never well seen on forums, I would advise next time you PM the moderator in charge of this section with your issues.

As for your issue with the thread title, I don't see it as the poster not offering his opinion. Do we really have to qualify everything with "In my opinion" all the time, especially when talking about subjective matters ? There is nothing that can be construed as objective in judging something as pathetic and so it's quite obvious the title of the thread is not an outright statement of fact.

Ah, I see your point now.
Is the OP referring to the new Macbook Air ad? If so, it doesn't mention anything about "what we've learned about the iPad", it just says "Everything we've learned has come down to this".

He's referring to Steve's comments during the keynote.

I do not intend to question the moderator. :)
Just unfamiliar with the reason why it was removed.
Also my short comment was only meant sarcastic, not to attack the topic starter, with the intention to think about the titel.

No worries, I don't think it's a big deal. So could you help me about the thread topic? I'm lost as to what the OP was referring to? The MBA ad doesn't mention the iPad. Thanks. :)

I deliver a product that contains a PDF, and the iPad allows me to flip through the pages while I'm doing a sales presentation or facilitation. But the point I continually make to others is that the iPad isn't a "full fledged" computer.

I'm sure Apple learned a good deal from the iPad and they put all those lessons to good use in creating the latest generation MBA. I think this was the intent of the marketing, which is true enough. There's a good deal of hardware similarity; unfortunately, the MBA isn't an iPad ... and vice-versa. That's why I own both.

I agree that my air is not any more "instant on" than my mbp. I get a lag when coming back from stand by, and although it is not a long lag, it is not an instant on experience either.
