"All Thumbs" Needs 4GB

I'm getting a new iMac 24" 3.06GHz from my wife for a Holiday gift. (I know, Lucky Me!)

I need the 4GB of memory and know that it will cost me almost $200 more to have it pre-loaded from Apple. So my question is just how easy/hard is it for me to upgrade to 4GB myself (after buying the 4GB from OWC or Crucible etc.)

As the subject title indicates . . I am "All Thumbs." Seriously . . . can someone lay out the specific steps I would need to do . . . or is it one of those "don't try this on your own" deals?

Unscrew one screw, pull out the old DIMMs, line up the pins, pop in the new ones.

Even if you had no thumbs you could pull this off.

Make sure the computer is off and unplugged, though.


Uuuuuhhhhh.... you REALLY want to put off getting that holiday gift until MacWorld. You REALLY do.

I just changed out the RAM in my imac and it is a breeze to do that. Very simple way of changing it. All you need is a screwdriver. Anyway, for instructions, I google a YouTube video. Just watch it once and you'll know what to do. I think Apple support site has some information on this too.

The user manual that comes with the iMac has instructions and diagrams for upgrading the ram. It is wicked easy to do and you will save yourself a considerable amount of money.

Small children can do it. Just do it on something besides the carpet if you have it, to avoid static. Touch a metal part of the case to dissipate any static electricity on your person (You could also touch the case). It's been said that the best way to service your computer is naked. No clothes to create static!

Playing it safe is a good idea with a $1500 piece of equipment, but static isn't a big deal.

To build on Skil's point, there is a "new iMac coming at MWSF" rumor that looks pretty plausible. It's in your best interest to wait for the keynote before buying something. Besides, I'm sure you and your wife can think of more entertaining things to do on Christmas morning.
