Wanted to convert a Flac to mp3 this morning.
Opened ALL2MP3, and got Apple's "this app may not be compatible...) dialog. (32 bit software)
Looked for an update thru the app itself.
Viola, sure enough there was an update: 2.0820 to 2.09.
I saved my previous version as All2MP3old.
The installer asked me nicely about adding two or three pieces of software I'd never heard of.
Then asked me to take a survey.
Then, without asking, installed MacDefender.
Then installed All2MP3 v 2.09, which is also a 32 bit app, so soon to be useless.
Had to install Malwarebytes to kill off Defender.
Turned out Malwarebytes was fairly intrusive, and icon on Menubar;wanted to check for updates once an hour.
At least it quarantined, but did not remove MacDefender.
Used AppCleaner to remove Malwarebytes.
Used Find Any File to in look everywhere mode (Option key) and found a pile of files that Malwarebytes and Appcleaner missed (Keywords Malwarebytes an MacDefender).
Killed them all by hand.
Now I have a reasonably speedy Mac again.
Only took an hour and a half.
But the Flacs are now MP3's.
Conclusions: Updating ALL2MP3 beyond 2.08 can cause a world of trouble.
Give it a pass. The thing is still 32 bit anyway.
Malwarebytes is not as innocuous as I remembered it to be.
The best way to kill malware is by hand with a good file search App.
Find Any File is still 32 bit, but EasyFind, which will also let you search in all the nooks and crannies is 64 bit.
