Hey guys,

I was wondering if there was a simple method of checking if I am allergic to a product by simply searching that product on some sort of app (prefer Mac or Android, no IOS). It doesn't need to be complicated, I can add products myself for example and then search them later on but it needs to be clear.
I know there are apps for intolerances but that's not what I'm searching for because those apps only consider lactose or other intolerances and I have an intolerances of coffee, cacao and all animal milk products.

Thanks in advance!

Greets,
Jos

I think you mean "checking products to see if they contain a specific allergen".

Because of the vast number of products and the way products can change ingredients I'm pretty sure you won't find an accurate database.

I've noticed in the UK that labeling allergens is currently far superior to the US. However, that labeling is mostly limited to gluten, soy, dairy, nuts and probably a couple I'm forgetting. I've never seen coffee or cacao listed as an allergen.

So...the ease of checking a product for a specific allergen can range from "simple and quick" to "annoying and unfruitful".

I use the MONASH University's FODMAP app on iOS, and I like it. No OS X version, but there is a Android version on the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.monashuniversity.fodmap&hl=en

Keep in mind that they're Aussie, so a zucchini here in the US is a courgette there. MONASH is one of the sources of alleviating IBS symptoms, so that app is generally food-based. This app helped me understand that I don't have "milk" or "lactose" intolerance but rather an intolerance to compounds used to feed dairy cattle here in the US - I can eat EU-made cheese and butter like those from Kerrygold's dairy in Ireland with no problems, but as soon as I dig into Tillamook or Bandon Cheddar my guts start gurgling. (Sorry for TMI IBS thing...)

The WebMD Allergies app on iOS and Android are also pretty helpful - I have issues with latex, and that app helped me avoid foods like bananas and avocados (gawd it's hard avoiding guac...). https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.webmd.allergy&hl=en

You are thinking of the UK or France I suspect. Zucchinis are zucchinis in Australia.
Not thinking of, though likely the UK as I've been there and seek out vegetarian fare from Indian shops often, however, MONASH is AUS-based and calls them courgettes in the app - go figure? When I go to France, there's far too many other delectable foods to eat than that lowly veg...

Then I suspect they're getting their data from overseas. I certainly had never heard of them as courgettes until I left Australia.

Having a look, they use zucchini on their website (e.g. http://www.med.monash.edu/cecs/gastro/fodmap/low-high.html and on the wider uni campus - http://www.monash.edu/environmental-sustainability/get-involved/students/monash-permaculture, http://www.monash.edu/__data/assets...Catering-Menu-MCC-Spring-Summer-2015-2016.pdf). Maybe they got their app done by visitors from overseas (or just outsourced it)?

Anyway slightly off the OPs topic I guess...

I did see that on their website, along with some other odd-to-me name substitutions....

FWIW, I'm "allergic" to zucchinis unless they're in tasty zucchini bread, warmed and with a couple of pats of Irish butter. :p
