So I figured I'd share my story with you guys and see if maybe someone else has had a similar issue or has a solution of some sort. Here's what happened...
It all started last Wednesday. I got home from work, downloaded iTunes 10.5 on my computer, and proceeded to download iOS 5. Everything went smoothly, until I start going through the setup screen. As I start going through it, I get to a point where it reads "non compatible sim card". ITunes read the same message. It also says "no service" in the upper left corner of the screen. So the next night I visited my local AT&T store, where they replaced the sim card for me. No luck. Still the same problem. So I made an appointment to visit the genius bar. *Unfortunately, due to the 4s release, they were backed up for a few days. So I dealt without a phone for a few days and went to my local Apple store (Garden State Plaza - Paramus, NJ) for my appointment. One of the techs started looking at my phone, and after assessing my situation, he decided a replacement phone was the route to take since I am still in warranty. He gave me a new iPhone and even downloaded iOS 5 in the store for me to save me the step. So I left the store with a working phone again. But unfortunately, the story doesn't end here.
I go home and plug into iTunes to restore my phone from backup. The phone reboots after being wiped, and seconds later, the same message pops up on iTunes and on my phone: unsupported sim card, and no service. So I immediately made another genius bar appointment. Since Garden State Plaza is closed on Sunday's, I went to Willowbrook Mall in Wayne, NJ. Again, the genius bar was quite backed up, so I had some waiting to do. But they eventually got to me, and I told them my story. They felt I should try another new sim card, even though it was only 2 days old. So I went to an AT&T store in the same mall and they gave me another new sim card and did everything they could think of to correct my issue. Nothing worked. So I returned back to Apple, where they were nice enough to replace the phone under warranty again. This time, they didn't update it to iOS 5 due to long download times. They left it running 4.3.5. But it was actually a blessing in disguise. I got home and was able to restore the phone from backup and everything was just the way it was before trying to update originally...but I still wanted iOS 5. So I decided to take a gamble and try downloading iOS 5 on another computer in my house. Just like the first time I did it, and like when I did it on my iPad, my iPod touch and my mom's 3GS, everything went very smoothly...with one exception: the problem had come back. "No service" in the top left corner, unsupported sim card on iTunes and on the phone.*
So back to Apple I went for the third day in a row. I showed the tech my phone, told him the whole story, and told him all I ask is for one more replacement, with iOS 4.3.5, and I'll leave it at that and give up trying to get iOS 5 on my phone for now. He was reluctant at first...and hell I would be too. 3 phones in 3 days? Thats gotta raise some sort of red flag with management. But after trying his own personal phone's sim card in my phone and ending up with the same result, he gave in and gave me another phone. So I brought it home, loaded up my info, and now I have a phone again after 5 days without it.
I'm beginning to think that my iPhone doesn't want to get updated anymore. I mean, something is not adding up. *What the hell could make this happen? Any time the phone with my sim card gets wiped while running iOS 5, the fault appears and ultimately bricks the phone. Maybe the universe is telling me to get a 4s...but if I do, who's to say I won't have the same issue?*All I want is a working iPhone that's up to date with all my apps and contacts and settings. Doesn't seem too far fetched, does it? Yet for some reason, it does.*
If anyone has any info pertaining to this issue, whether you've seen it before, or you have an idea to resolve it, I'd like to hear your input.
