Does anyone know of a way of forcing the HDMI output (on an rMBP in this case) to allow > 1920x1080 outputs? In this case it's not a hardware limitation. I installed Windows 8 on this laptop, and it is able to push 2560x1440 just fine over HDMI. So the GPU clearly supports it.

Edit: It seems OSX for some reason does not allow the HDMI port to function at >165MHz. If I set the refresh rate to 40Hz via SwitchResX (which is low enough that 2560 can fit within the bandwidth provided by a single link at 165MHz), the display works at 2560 just fine.

However, I should be able to run 60Hz (or even higher). I'm able to do so in Windows - the hardware is obviously capable.

This is something you probably want to call Applecare for and be escalated to engineering...

My guess is Apple wants to push mDP and so they purposely left it out of the Mac OS X graphics drivers...

I'm curious about this as well, since it means I can potentially drive my 2560x1600 monitors without paying for an expensive active mDP to DL-DVI adapter.

Also this thread probably better belongs in Macbook Pro forum.

Well this particular monitor does take displayport, so i don't need an expensive adapter... but I was hoping I could leave the thunderbolt slots open for ethernet and firewire. I guess I'll call Apple. But I'm sure I'll just get the official spiel which is that the HDMI port only supports 1920x1200.

I was debating that. I posted it here since it seems to be a software issue, and there are non macbook pros with HDMI outputs (Mac Mini comes to mind). But if a mod wants to move it, then that's fine of course.
