I want to be able to browse through the app store by category and view only new apps. Going by release date, I end up with every application that has had an update mixed as well. I don't want that. I want a listing of applications by date, that were released for the first time.

I'd love this as well- but at the moment, I just use AppShopper to go through the new apps since it lets you filter by update/price change/new....

Exactly. Otherwise, it creates an incentive for developers to change one line of code to create an update, and stay "fresh". Plus, they get 50 more promo codes with each update. Until Apple fixes this, use one of the app sites that tracks "truly" new apps.

Yeah I just don't want to have to use an external site to do it.

I think being able to browse the app store can be a self-standing experience. I realize this will suffice in the meantime, but really for the reasons others mentioned above the updates being included in the recent list just make it worthless.

Use appsniper.

MacToddB,

I have given a lot of thought to this conundrum recently. Sending updates to the top of the "Most Recent" apps list is problematic in many ways because it can be abused as you've described.

However it is also a good thing in some ways, because it rewards developers for improving their products. This drives further innovation and many products end up being better than ever would be if they were released and abandoned.

On the other hand, this model also gives developers the incentive to release buggy or incomplete products. It all depends on the integrity of the developer.

One of the root causes of this problem is that the only market plan for the majority of app developers is to put there product on iTunes. There is no plan beyond that, so developers will promote their product in the only way they can think of which is to do an "update". I have personally found that this is effective to a certain extent, but it does not seem sustainable in the long run.

For this reason and also since I am trying to create a profitable business, I have been working since day one to develop a marketing strategy that will work. I am currently experimenting with different marketing methods. I have yet to find the right one. It looks to me like you're on the right track, and I'm studying what you and other successful developers are doing.

Share and enjoy,

Perhaps the solution to this, and the overall app problem, is more granularity.

NEW should be NEW. Create another tab for "UPDATED". And another for "Featured by Apple Corporate", another for "Featured by Apple Staff and so on.

Thanks, we're trying, but I have to give credit in large part to "luck"!!!

I actually have a business idea that could help the little guys. I've been mulling it over and when I have some more to announce, I'll post on this Forum.

Guys, right now the 'new tab' doesn't even accurately show new apps, because when apps are released most of their release dates are set waay too far back for some reason. Which is why in appsniper there's a constant stream of new apps, but in the app store there's a handful every few days.

Appsniper is the solution. It's getting closer and closer to being an improved appstore, it already has searching, new, categories, etc.. But also, it has the snipe list, the watch list, and the recent price drop list. So whether you want an improved app store or a way to save on deals, it's worth it.

As a developer, you can set the availability date for an app. iTunes uses the EARLIER date of either that manually set date, or the date the app (or update) was approved. So developers who want to show up as new need to set their availability date to the same date as their approval, for the initial and updated releases. I created my app "profile" in September, submitted the binary in November, so when it was approved in December, it said September so I had to scramble (and learn about the above) to make it show up as New.
