I've only had my M1 Pro for about a week, but I didn't expect to love the Touch Bar at all. So many users called it gimmicky, fussy, useless.

I work and play laying on the sofa a lot. The front edge of the laptop is on my stomach, the screen propped up against my thighs, so the trackpad is awkward to reach. Carpal tunnel, anyone? So obviously having controls just below the screen is practical.

But beyond the physical placement, for audio such as listening to music on Spotify, the controls are just clearly BETTER, beyond my lazy-assed sofa life. And I'm impressed that Apple programmed such precise controls on the Touch Bar for Spotify, their main competitor in streaming.

Working with music, and listening to music, for hours on end, the precise volume level is vital, and I'm frequently adjusting it. Too loud and I start to damage my ears over hours. But I really want to hear certain passages loudly. The fact that you can single touch the volume button and then slide it to the increment you want with a single gesture is great. But even better is the "other" volume control that appears, the "fine" volume control, just to the left of the main one. (which also lets you 'touch and slide' single-gesture) Once you have set the general level of the volume you want, you can just use the 'fine' control alone. Because often, the increments on the main volume control lack subtlety: one level is too quiet, the next up is too loud.

Sure, on other Macs I've used the key command for fine volume control: Option+Shift, and then the volume up or down buttons. When I can remember the darn key commands. But I for one am thrilled I have an easier control right below my screen. As well as many other buttons specific to Spotify.

I have not yet worked extensively with the Touch Bar in other programs, like Logic Pro, but I look forward to learning it.

Another small audio thing I love is that as a right-handed person, the headphone jack being on the right side is better, so when I pick up my laptop with my right hand, I'm not dragging the cord awkwardly across the machine.

Agree on both accounts. I also picked up a M1 MBP, and never having used a Touchbar before, I was initially skeptical. However, a couple of weeks later, I am finding myself rather enjoying it. Even when writing, having the word and spelling suggestions pop-up, though far from essential, is a nice feature.

Apple doesn’t program in controls for third party apps. They provide the API, and Spotify used it to add Touch Bar controls for their app.

I agree with you that the Touch Bar is very handy once you use it for a while.

I upgraded to finally try out a TB Mac as a daily driver.

So far, it's just there. I don't really like or dislike it.
It's nice for a quick action here or there, but not a fan of having to look down at the keyboard to see (learn?) the contexts.
I guess I never really used that area of the keyboard much aside from media playback and volume+brightness hotkeys.

Are you guys using the stock Touch Bar controls all the time, or do you have it configured with BetterTouchTool or others?

Do you have to use a third-party tool to get the Touch Bar to behave as you like? Can't it be configured in the Mac OS?

I’ve had a TB MBP for a few months now, I miss the function keys, hardly ever use the TB. I think it’ll take me a while to get used to it. I also find i accidentally but the volume buttons on the TB or even the Siri button.

I haven't been using my M1 MBP long enough to go beyond the basics of the Touch Bar, but I do like it so far.

Here are some links that might be useful that I have bookmarked for when I want to go beyond the basics:
Everything you can do with the MacBook Pro's Touch Bar
Awesome Touch Bar apps you won't find in the Mac App Store
Everything you need to know about the Touch Bar for MacBook Pro
How to make the function keys the default Touch Bar display
How to use the Touch Bar with ANY app thanks to BetterTouchTool
Customize the Touch Bar on MacBook Pro
TouchSwitcher — Use Touch Bar to Switch Apps

I hope some of these prove useful. I can't say anything one way or the other about any third party apps mentioned in these articles, but some of them looked interesting enough for me to bookmark them for future reference.

I considered getting a macbook instead of an iMac, but the keyboard are too fragile for my big sausage fingers... I like the concept of the touchbar though. Maybe Apple should introduce one on their desktop keyboards.

I've heard nothing but good things about BetterTouchTool on podcasts even before M1. I don't have a touch bar MacBook yet but I'm really considering the new M1. I'm still torn between the Air and the Pro though.

Yeah I'm realizing that when I'm working on my back with my legs up writing as well, it's great for word suggestions.

But the key to enjoying the Touch Bar for me, might be my slack-assed sofa surfing. When sitting upright, you have to look down too far, especially as a touch-typer. It's on my back that I love it. And it helps ward off the carpal tunnel.

I tried, can’t stand the TouchBar. I sometimes have my finger tips resting on the keyboard, while reading the screen, and end up activating something, turning off the sound, etc...IMO it is a “solution” for a nonexistent problem.

I made a custom configuration for my Touch Bar using BetterTouchTool. There are a few clever widgets (like "Now Playing", which allows you to see the album info and song name of the currently playing song). It makes me really enjoy the Touch Bar.

I like the touch bar and find it useful. I understand some people don't like it and prefer physical Fn keys...I think it works really great with media. I guess depends on someone use, I don't use much Fn keys.
The volume is either slider or you can click volume down or up. I am not sure why some people say it is hard to control volume.
Anyway, I think not essential but I think it is a cool feature on MBP.

Oh that's cool. For Spotify, or iTunes, or what? I'd love to be able to see "what's playing" and skip songs etc. without having to toggle over to the Spotify app itself.

I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve accidentally turned off the sound or hit the Siri button.

I use it for volume and brightness etc. I have 5 desktops on my Mac with an app on each screen and as I swipe screens the Touch Bar adjusts for that app. love it.
That sounds pukka.

I discovered a new radio app, called myTuner Radio. When you add favourite stations to your account, the Touch Bar shows little thumbnails of the station logos, that you can simply tap on.

They look so cute, ha!

I have the Touch Bar on my 15" work Mac, and as cool as I think it looks, I hardly ever think to use it other than the volume control. One of the reasons I didn't mind going with the Air for my M1 Mac. Touch Bar is nice to have for me, but not a must have. I certainly don't hate it though--it's a pretty slick feature sometimes.

Got any tips for use?
Lately I've been running it setup to show app controls as primary, then control strip hotkeys when I press the Fn key.

Makes it pretty quick and easy to access the hotkeys while retaining the touchbar benefits in some apps. I go back and forth on keeping the control strip on.

Glad you like it, but it's still a pile of steaming crap. The way you know it's awful is that Huawei didn't ever copy it.
