Alpha Centauri: "Connection failed"

For the last few days whenever I started Alpha Centauri (Carbon) the application locks up immediately and after a while a messagebox comes up:

"The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connections and try again."

After that Alpha Centauri sometimes starts, but more often continues being locked up until it displays the messagebox again and a third time after which it quits.

What server might it be trying to connect to and why?

Any ideas?

Turns out there was an alias somewhere in the Alpha Centauri directory which pointed to an older location of the file it was supposed to be pointing to.

And for some reason Alpha Centauri suddenly decided that that now matters and must be due to a network issue.
