Alpha Centauri VS Civilization

Hey guys,
I am a long time civ fan but I wanna try something knew. What do you guys think of alpha centauri? The reviews are great but one thing Im worried about is that it might be too similair to Civ II or III. I mean already the screenshots look almost identical except with a space theme. What do you guys think?

It's different enough to be worth getting (if you can find it that is...the Mac version seems to go for silly amounts of money these days). I personally found that it can get too fiddly, and prefer Civilization overall, but I still liked it and played it a number of times. Some people like it more than Civ.

SMAC was good because it provided a lot of variety from the straight Civ series. It had a sci-fi feel since the setting, techs and units were futuristic. For the most part, basic gameplay was the same.

Like Eric5h5, I prefer Civ.
