Here is my situation. I already have a dektop with a Ryxen 2700, Rtx 2070, 32 gigabytes of ram, and multiple hard drives. I also own an asus gaming laptop with a i7 7700hq, 16 GB's of ram, 500 GB SSD, optical drive.

I do video editing on my desktop and mostly photo scanning on my Asus gaming laptop. I thought I would be editing videos on the go, but have not done enough to justify the weight on the gaming laptop.

I purchased a used 2018 MBA 128 GB yesterday for $1000 CDN, to use for photo scanning and photo editing when not at home. I absolutely love the trackpad, though having to use dongles or a hub seems annoying and counter productive.

Would you keep the gaming laptop or the Macbook Air?

I thought I would be editing videos on the go....

What software do you use for video editing on your desktop? Is it available for the Mac (and will you need to pay extra to get the Mac version)? You might want to transfer video projects between desktop and laptop (rather than just raw video and finished video) which is going to be a pain if you are using different software - not to mention the hassle of mentally switching between two different video editing packages.

Pretty much anything these days is OK in a pinch for occasionally editing HD-or-lower videos, but the MBA is never going to be a great choice for doing more than that (and will probably need an external HD, so by the time you've hooked up a camera and still want to charge it you'll need to carry a hub...) so it comes down to how much you need video editing on the go...

but have not done enough to justify the weight on the gaming laptop

...sounds like you just answered your own question.
