My 1st gen iphone is already pwned to 2.0 - can I update to 2.0.1 direct from iTunes now, or do I still need to use the pwnage tool? ...or will this brick the phone again?

If you let iTunes restore the phone, it will cause the phone to become locked / unjailbreaked again. If you want 2.0.1 to be jailbreaked, you have to run Pwnage 2.0.2 on the 2.0.1 firmware and create a new jailbreaked IPSW.

But neither route will brick the phone.

You need to repwn to 2.0.1 and reinstall. If you use Itunes that will only place the original 2.0.1 on top of your pwned 2.0.

ok, i'm a bit confused. So my phone has to be unlocked for me because I'm in Canada and it's the 1st gen phone... so i'm obviously not on the intended carrier. I don't use jailbreak apps and never installed cydia in the past.

So, I just want to update to 2.0.1 and still be able to use the phone. Period. I buy my apps from iTunes. I know I'm a noob and I think Im missing something.

Then you have to do this:

You need to repwn to 2.0.1 and reinstall. If you use Itunes that will only place the original 2.0.1 on top of your pwned 2.0.

The reason is that jailbreaking an iPhone is the only way to unlock it (an iPhone can be jailbreaked but not unlocked, but there is no way for you to unlock your iPhone without jailbreaking it, and it does not stay unlocked/jailbreaked when you update it through iTunes).

There are detailed guides out there, but in essence the steps are:

- Get Pwnage 2.0.2
- Download the 2.0.1 firmware either through iTunes or however else.
- Run Pwnage and create a pwn'd 2.0.1 firmware file
- Put the iPhone in DFU mode
- Use iTunes to restore your iPhone to the pwn'd 2.0.1 file

I personally like / used this guide:

In your case you need the unlock and activation to have the phone working in canada.

The unlock done on firmware 2.0 actually stays on 2.0.1 official apple firmware as the baseband (modem) is not updated on the original iPhone.

In fact I personally think you don't even need a jailbreak at all - as if your on Rogers/Fido then your SIM card will be accepted as legitimate and your phone activated through itunes.

However - should this fail then you would have to DFU restore to 2.0.1 pwnage.

Your unlock will remain but worse case scenario all you would need is the activation.

Its you choice! If you want cydia/installer then use pwnage if not then try a standard upgrade and it SHOULD work but if it doesn't then just repwn your phone as that is easy enough!
