about to sell my 14" iBook and would like to know how to get it ready for its new owner. How do I "wipe" it clean of all my junk and make it so it's a new system when the new owner powers it on for the first time? I just need to make sure I've gotten rid of all my personal stuff and it's clean and fresh like it was when I got it. any help is much appreciated.

Hi
If you happen to have the original install dvds do a new software installation. Its quite easy just put them in and follow the instructions.[remember its not install and archive, there should be another option when doing it] Hope this helped.

when and if you do a full install, it'd be nice to make the user's account their name if you know it. all my friend got was "macuser" and no install dvd's to change it.

I've got all the install discs and all the original packaging. So all I need to do is a re-install of the OSX and I'm good to go? How do I get rid of any and all traces of what I've done on the system?

Yep you should be good to go. Just to be sure im going to put my instal cds in my MacBook and follow the onscreen direction to complete restore [except im not going to actually reinstall hehe] I'll post backs soon. Hope this helped

Yup, just get the discs in and hit the "Install Mac OS X and Bundled Software" icon and then you restart* [*they ask you to restart once the icon is clicked] and follow the onscreen instructions, remember just do not select the install and archive when reinstalling, as this will just reinstall the OS and leave user files there. Feel free to ask anything else if needed

You should use Disk Utility from the install disk to do a seven-pass wipe of the drive before reinstalling the OS. It takes quite awhile even for a relatively small drive like a 40Gb one. I usually start stuff like this early on a weekend morning so I have plenty of time to finish up while I'm still awake, not yawning over a fresh install at midnight...
