Two for me. My car adapter and my Sony headphones that weren't cheap either. I still don't understand why the headphone jack wasn't a standard size. Oh well, at least it wasn't that hard to cut.

I built a small extension cable (ergo the one that Griffin/Belkin are selling) out of an old headphone extension cable. I just shaved one end and shortened the cable so that it was a few inches of bendy goodness long. Fits me fine.
yeah, i've seen a couple adapters and some i could shave to fit, but the splitter works...plus it comes in handy.

they are standard. however, the port is recessed, making it difficult to plug in standard headphones that aren't slim enough.

Honestly I think it's because of the design. They didn't want to break up the silhouette of the iPhone so they recessed it.
You might be correct. I don't know, it's ok to reinvent the wheel sometimes (the entire iphone), but why mess with a standard (headphone jack)?
Probably because they knew that while people would bitch about it, they would ultimately not really care that much. And it's pretty easy to predict that new iPhone-jack friendly adapters and headphones would soon come out.
Plus, the iPhone comes with headphones so it's not like you can't use it at all.
Basically it's someone saying that form trumps function. The world has enough of function trumping form, so I don't mind a little bit of that in this corner of the universe.
And that's fine for someone with less-than-stellar audio standards (i.e. the iphone's headset). Buy I'd like to connect quality headphones without marring them (they fit it 99.99% of stereos). There was no reason to honkup a perfectly good standard.
Just buy a Belkin adapter for $9 at the Apple store. It's flexible and bendable, and will make any headset fit perfectly.

Has anyone tried using a dremel or something like that to just take the size down a little bit? Even one of those little ones that comes in the home manicure kits ought to work...

I wondered whether they recessed it so that people would tend to use headphones designed for the iphone:
these will be made by many 3rd parties soon and will include a mic and button inline, like the supplied ones.
by doing it this way, most people will get new headphones especially for the iphone and have a better usage, plus loyalty to future iphones (rather than say microsoft's future attempt - zunePhone?!)

That would certainly (sp) make sense. A home stereo jack wouldn't need to be as robust. Thanks.

I've been IDd twice for having iphone buds (must be the mic switch/mic) even though the phone was hidden in my pocket.
Me too. I've slimmed down the headphone jack on my current headphones with a razor blade because I absolutely despise earbuds. Once someone comes out with non-earbud headphones that 100% functionally replace the iPhone earbud setup I'll grab one.
That was my point as to why there is no expansion slot. It's a design thing nothing more.

I used a knife for one and a box cutter for the other. Anything sharp woll work if the rubber area isn't crazy tough.
I too am not a fan of the ipod earbuds as I rather use my ear canal buds instead.
