I'm getting an Apple TV later this month, and I have started ripping all of my movies onto my Mac with HandBrake. But after watching the movies full-screen on the 20 inch iMac, I'm beginning to wonder if they will still look good on a 50 inch TV. Our couch is about 12 feet away from the TV, which I know is a big difference than sitting in the chair right in front of the computer, but I am still curious. Were/are any of you in the same situation? Do the movies look alright? I am using the Apple TV preset in HandBrake, but I would love to know if there is something I can be doing to make the movies clearer. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Alright I have a question about the clearness of ripped movie on my TV.

Same question here I have not bought the apple TV yet but the picture quality is iffy.
I am ripping movies at 2750 and I am seeing blockiness, especially with blacks and fogginess (I've read all about this issue so i know it cannot be fixed yet).
However, I wonder how will these look on my 50 inch HD plasma if it looks bad on my 17" imac.
Any input.
I already have 110 GB ripped so I hope it wasn't for nothing.

I ripped all of my movies at 2500kbits 2-pass iTunes setting in Handbrake. They do not look that great- full-screened on my 15inch macbook pro. In their native resolution they look ok. On my DLP 52" television they look awesome. In fact I've had numerous people tell me they look much better than just the DVD played through a DVD player. No worries - you're gonna like the way they look... I guarantee it.
The problem has to be the mac itself, never use it as a dvd player because it sucks.
Watching ripped movies on my 120" projector screen looks fantastic, whereas they look bad on my mac. Original DVD content even looks bad on my mac LCD.
There is quality loss but that's the game we play when we decide to store digitally. It's no different than mp3's vs CD audio.
Yes, that's right. With audio as long as you have cheap equipment MP3 sounds good put with high end stereo or a good set of studio style headphones I can hear the defects in MP3 and I had to re-rip everything in Apple lossless. Same with video. The Apple iMac or ACD is a very good monitor and will show clearly every little defect in the video file. As said above even DVDs are recorded at much lower resolution than the iMac screen. But if you look at the same video from 12 feet on a TV set unless you eyes are very good the little artifacts disappear.
However you can always rip the DVD to a much higher bit rate if you want better quality. You trade disk space and bandwidth for quality. You will have to experiment.
DVD looks great on iMac G5 and intel iMac. Plenty of people use iMac and other Macs to play movies.
If you use the best handbrake settings (search) you can get movies indistinguishable from DVDs.
IMHO, I think DVD is ok for 50'' but 720P is DEFINITELY preferred!
I'm sort of an HD person though and I can't stand watching a DVD on anything above 32''.
And when watching movies I usually sit within 10 feet of my 73'' tv, and within 7 feet of my 32''.
