is it possible to de-activate the initialise sound at powering up of the computer? i have looked in vein.....

Out of curiosity, why do you want to do that? :confused:
Couldn't you leave the computer on all the time in sleep anyway?
I don't think it's possible...

i find if i leave my mac in sleep for too long it freezes, so if im away from it for more than 48 hours ill turn it off.

yes its worrying me too, i flip it back out of sleep by just knocking the mouse and then the screen has frozen, have to reboot to operate.

as my first post explained, im new macs, well, computers!!! forgive my ignorance but would that be disk utility, how would i do a general maintenance check?

They do three different, non-overlapping things. I'm not certain that any of them is responsible for what you are seeing, but they are some standard things that may help. :)
