i use a dial-up connection and the Mac OSX update has reached 119MB... ok this may take 10 min on high speed but with my connection it coulds take anywere from 12 to 14 hours!!!!

so does apple have a place that i could download it without having to go through the software update thing! (so basically i can pause it or retsart it if i lose my connection)

I believe you can pause with software update these days. The answer is yes, though. You can get the combo here or the update from 10.4.3 here.
