I recently organized all my notes in Notes for macOS 10.14 in folders and subfolders - only to find out that Notes for iOS 13 does not show any subfolders (but all notes that are in subfolders in Notes for macOS simply as unorganized notes in All iCloud).

This makes Notes for me pretty much useless.

What are good (and hopefully still simple) note taking alternatives for macOS and iOS that support subfolders? I dont' need any advanced features like note-sharing or else - I just have a bunch of notes in different categories (folders with subfolders) that I want to be able to read and edit both on my Mac and my iOS devices.

Thanks for your tips!

I use 1Writer on iOS and IA Writer on MacOS. Both apps support subfolders. You can sync notes via Dropbox or a Webdav share. Both apps have great search functionality (I stopped using Notes after they changed the search function).

Both apps also use Markdown for layout, which you have to like. I like it because it's simple and I can work with pure text files (and I can quickly switch to a different markdown app without conversion if needed).

Interesting. I will look at that.

What made you choose 1Writer for iOS over IA Writer for iOS?

1Writer for iOS has a, for me, much better search function. In 1Writer you can sort the search results which is very handy, in IA Writer for iOS you can't. Strangely, IA Writer for MacOS can sort search results. I wrote an email to the developer about this and he said he will look into it.

By the way, Apple changed the sort order of the search results in Notes in iOS 10 or so, which made it for me useless.
