My 24 IMAC fell over and the screen was shattered. Apple wants over $1000 to fix and replace the lcd screen. My question is, Can I attach my 42" Monitor to my imac to use as the main display? I tried and all I'm getting is just the desktop image on my 42" display. I can't get into the system preferences of course to change the display preferences...help!

1) As a mini owner I have to gloat a bit that my 24" monitor only cost $299 new and even a Dell would be less than your repair (sorry, but I get hammered all the time on how outdated the mini is by iMac boosters - this case is a win for the mini)

2) If you have another computer you can screen share in using VNC (if screen sharing is on).

3) If you have another mac you can put yours into FireWire Target Disk Most (hold T at boot IIRC) and then access the drive. You should be able to use the good Mac to boot off of this external drive and at least turn on Leopard Screen Sharing.

4) Blindly do it: See this post of success: https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=6098721.

I guess I would try to hit the dock preferences. Once that pops up you can change the dock to the right side and launch stuff. Hopefully System Preferences is on the dock still. Open that then drag it over then go for screen sharing or monitor preferences. You want mirror, not span.

If you do get mirror set to on, you will have to use another monitor of the exact same resolution that your internal screen is set to.

So you would have to get your mac set to 1920x1080 for example if your 42" is a 1080P monitor.

He is asking something different...

There is a key combination to put the main display to sleep so everything is transferred to the external display. Look for it in these threads, it is with the cd eject key. (This is for notebooks, I do not know if it works with an iMac, as I only have a MacBook)

You can try to press F7 to enter or exit mirror mode.
