Alternative to Quicken

I had used Quicken for personal finances for years, but gave it up a because they went to a subscription model (and they are suboptimal, to put it politely). I don't need any fancy budgeting/investing/financial planning capabilities, just something that is for all intents and purposes a checkbook where I can download transactions, checks and deposits from my bank online to keep track of things. Any suggestions?

I use Banktivity. Unfortunately they recently went to a subscription model. I'm continuing with them until I can find something equal or better without the subscription.

I have similar needs. I use Moneydance.

I use Excel. Setup a chart of accounts to assign transactions account numbers. Then setup =round(sumif)) statements to add up all the transactions in each account.

You can try Mint. Though it is a cloud-based web platform and mobile app. Your accounts are automatically synced between the web and mobile app. This makes it easier to manage your finances in real-time.

Same here. I switched from Banktivity to See Finance 2 several months ago and have been very satisfied.

+1 with a basic spreadsheet (ie Numbers, Excel, LibreOffice, etc)

I did the same once everyone moved to subscription based models and I m not a fan of cloud-based options.

After some deliberation I created custom spreadsheet in Numbers for my yearly Accounting Ledger (mainly for the interactive support with other Mac apps). While there's a bit of 'design and setup'—once setup to your personal/custom needs—it will be exactly what you need. And in the future you can alter the file as your needs change.

If you need alot of external web based imports/exports you may be better off with a 'fuller featured' SSapp like Excel

I'm the developer of Moneydance (infinitekind.com), which I think meets your requirements. It has all the same features as Quicken, but in my biased view, a lot more friendly.

If your bank is one of the thousand or so that still support direct OFX connections then you can download transactions automatically (and sometimes send bill payments) as much as you like. However most banks these days require use of an aggregator which is a paid service to the app makers. As a result any finance app that downloads from a significant number of banks will need to be subscription based. For Moneydance we offer both the non-subscription and subscription model, but our subscription plan basically just covers the cost of the aggregator (Plaid.com).

i'm using banktivity, but plan on freezing it at the current level by not resubscribing at the end of the current subscription period since i just need the bronze level features.
