Anyone have any idea why the new 2.4ghz mac mini encdoes videos from DVD so slowly? it takes me twice as much time as my 09 mini.

yup it uses almost all of it. its really weird. im suspecting its the dvd drive itself that spins slower or something

ill definitely try this. Do u feel a difference with your new mac mini?

i could be way off but on my mbp if im encoding to h.264 its like 2-4x slower than if i change it to mpeg in settings.

I've found the same thing, my 2.66 Mini scans forever and when I finally get around to encoding it's noticeably slower than my year old 2.26 13" MBP. For the record I have the latest 64 bit versions of Handbrake and VLC on both machines with the exact same settings.

Would have to be a software/firmware issue. I don't notice this on my 2.66 mini (server), since I use an external drive. It's faster than my previous machine (2.66 2008 iMac).

I am using a Samsung external USB DVD drive in order to get around the slow Handbrake performance caused by Riplock. Are there any fixes for this (firmware flash) that can disable Riplock?

yea both have the same ram.
i think the culprit is riplock. the drive is much quieter than the old mini

Just tried to encode a movie on my new mini. Gets 3/4 way then stops. Never had this problem with my ( sold) 2008 Mac pro. Must be the new drives stopping this. Glad I still have an older external one to use.

You wouldn't by chance encoding to an external drive? Decided to try encoding to the desktop. Works great. FPS picked up allot. Not sure why my external didn't work. It's on FireWire 800 but it was extremely slow.
