Aluminum case Mac Pro may be coming back

According to the front page article (https://www.macrumors.com/2017/05/31/apple-registers-new-macs-ipads-eurasia/) Apple registered five new products. The author predicts that they are all MacBooks either air, pro, or regular, but said that the numbers are new for these products. I chose to look them up with other systems & they are all assigned & not new:

A1289 Traditional Tower Mac Pro
A1347 Mac Mini
A1418 21.5” iMac
A1419 27” iMac
A1481 Trashcan Mac Pro

Yep, the tower was registered. This may not be a release, but simple registration of older products, but it would be nice.

Indeed quite unbelievable. Even if Apple sees a long stall for mMP to roll out, they would at least try to update the trashcan MP first (how much of an upgrade it could possibly be is another question).

Cheese Grater case while still a sound design, its internal layout and components are quite outdated, optical bays for one is most likely not going to be shipped in any modern Mac. But if Apple were to release an aluminium casing Mac Pro, to the point that it uses the same model designation as the cMP, it means virtually no circuitry change but just EFI and perhaps connector updates to accommodate PCI lanes and modern I/Os. This sounds too good to be true.

While this simply won't happen, but in the odd chance that it did happen, I am sure most of us here would pay a top spec one in a heart beat.

Very interesting. How did MR miss this? Or is there another likely explanation? Even if they wanted to release a new product under the same number, I wouldn't think they would have to register it again.

Given the 5 numbers used, none are MacBooks...they include 2 iMacs, the mac mini, the trashcan mac pro, & the cheese grater tower mac pro. This points to either a much further update in the future or past released models. In the end...I think this probably means nothing to us.

It seems unlikely. The tail-between-legs press event makes it sound like they are going for a complete redesign and it will take however long it takes. If we just get an updated cheesegrater I will be very surprised.

Personally, I think they can do better than the cheesegrater. Unfortunately I also know they can do worse.

I don't have a problem with a modernized cheese grater design. The reality is that in a lot of ways the gaming computer industry kind of shows what is going to be popular in the market for high end custom PC's and well in that world big high capacity full size towers won the war and show no slow down in popularity. In fact every time there is a big tech show companies release bigger towers with higher capacity and lots of drive bays and everyone goes crazy over them.

Small form factor is very much a niche market. Even in laptops, in the windows world its going full on reversal from big laptops to small laptops now going back to big again, everyone wants desktop grade hardware in their super high performance laptops and they are enormous.

I 100% believe there is a modernized Cheesegrater mac coming out.

In my mind it makes too much sense.

2013 Trashcan will be about 5 years old, by mMP release, so release a small tower with a couple gpu slots cpu and ram, onboard flash. TB3 on back.

No way the trashcan can go another year, right? right????

Why a small tower? everyone wants huge amounts of expandability with lots of pcie lanes but then they say they want small.

I think compromise is needed here, it has been realised that people want internal upgradability and expansion, which does not work with small. Look at mini-ATI motherboards in the PC world, the pcie lanes and expandability options suck. If small is whats wanted they may as well just do another trashcan.

I would be happy with a cheese grater type case with more internal expansion, more pcie ports. So same size or bigger.

How deep Apple's collective head is up its own arse is always the biggest factor in speculating anything they do Mac Pro-wise. A literal Cheese Grater with updated components makes perfect sense for everyone of us here, but judging from the wording in that roundtable and also the current Apple product landscape, Cheese Grater just doesn't seem likely. If the mMP is already it, a Cheese Grater 2.0, then they should be able to roll it out in months, available now or at most late 2017. If the mMP is another revolutionary smart arse attempt that won't come any time soon, then a stop gap update should be a trashcan 7,1.

Funny when HP does a better Mac than Apple when it comes to design, function and form. Btw, Apple ....notice...not everything has to be so damn..thin or tiny.
