I got an Aluminum 20in iMac on the day they were released and started having problems as of yesterday..
Whenever I shutdown the computer, everything goes off the screen except the desktop image, and it just hangs there. I have to then manually shutdown the iMac with the power button. Does anyone have an idea what is causing this?

I have run repair disk permissions and have done a hardware check with TechTool Deluxe (Came with AppleCare). And both were succesful.

My startupItems are as follows
System/Library/StartupItems/
Apache
AppleShare
AppServices
AuthServer
CrashReporter
Disks
FibreChannel
IFCStart
IPServices
Metadata
NetworkTime
NFS
NIS
PrintingService
RemoteDesktop
SNMP

~/Library/StartupItems/
MySQLCOM

Hang on Close ...

Usually means the system or some application is trying to finish a task and needs to so before quitting.

Question: Do you have an .Mac account, if so, do you have iDisk set to create a copy of iDisk on your computer?

iDisk may be trying to update which will prevent you from shutting down unless you use the power button.
Two choices, either wait for it to update or reset it to not have a copy on your desktop.

The same kind of thing can happen if you keep your iMac synced with .Mac or another Mac.

To check to see if either is actively updating, look at the resource list on the left side of a Finder window. If there is a little "whirligig" spinning next to iDisk or iSync, it's working on an update.

If this is not the case, then I would suggest starting from your Restore disk that came with the iMac by holding down the "C" key when restarting. Then pull down the Utility menu and pick Disk Utility. Select your hard drive and do a Verify and Repair.

If all else fail, call Apple Support. :(

It may have been my .mac account, I am not sure, as the problem has stopped. YAY!!
But it was weird because even if I hadn't logged in yet and hit shutdown it would still hang.

This had also happened to another iMac I had, but it cleared itself up.
I'm a happy person again!
