Am I being too picky? (Squishy home button)

Hey guys, I'm looking for an opinion here. I joined the iPhone world last week with a 32GB model but unfortunately there was a defect in the LCD. I took it back to the Apple Store where I got it and after a little bit (first Genius said he couldn't see anything) they did a retail swap for a new model. The specialist who activated the phone was really cool and friendly.

I was happy and made sure to check the LCD at all angles looking for any screen defects before leaving the store and there weren't any.

Well after getting home and using for a little I've noticed that the Home button doesn't feel the same as the first phone or my wife's bought the same day. For lack of a better word it feels squishy or soft. On the first one I had and on my wife's there is a definite audible click when you depress the button. On mine it feels almost like the button is sunk in a little further. It seems to work OK but it is almost like I have to click a little more deliberately in the center of the button.

What do y'all think, does this sound normal, am I being too picky? I'm worried about the hassle involved if I want to exchange it again for a second time in the first week of ownership. There is always a chance the next replacement could be even worse or have screen problems again.

I've also noticed that on this one the silver bevel on the sides of the phone has more of a sharp edge to it. My first one and my wife's is much more smooth when running your finger from the back to the front. On mine it catches on the sharp edge of the silver.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts on these issues. I hate seeming like a complainer but for $325 I don't want to feel like I settled for less than perfect.

It varies phone to phone. My original 3G has a more squishy quiet home button. But when I got it replaced at the genius bar the new home button has an audible click. So it just depends.

Its up to you.. You paid several hundred dollars for a phone, it should behave/look the way it was intended to

Well I guess that is part of what I am asking. Does my description of the home button sound normal? Is the chrome bevel not being flush on the sides of the phone normal?

I've got only one other on hand to compare it to, so for all I know my wife just got a rare perfect unit and mine is more typical.

I bought my 3GS on launch day and the first thing i noticed was that the chrome bevel on the right side of the screen was slightly raised and it was really noticeable to me when i was swiping across the screen. Another issue was that i had the audible hum while recording video and after certain system sounds. Those were the only two issues with my old one.

Well I brought it into the apple store and got it replaced. The new one i received had a nice flush bezel but now it has the squishy soft home button and also the camera chrome ring is slightly raised. Also I think this one has pretty bad battery life. Most days I only get like 4 hours or so of usage.

The moral of the story, everyone iPhone is not the same. Each one has its little defects. I've learned to live with the squishy home button. Hopefully 3.1 will fix the battery issues. I want to bring it back for the battery now but i'm waiting to see if 3.1 fixes it. Good luck with yours!

Thanks, I appreciate your thoughts. The bevel is very smooth on the front of the phone so no complaints there. It is raised and sharp on the sides of the phone for me so I notice it while holding it. I guess once I get it in a case it won't even be noticeable but it still annoys me that it isn't even on both sides.

I guess I'm just paranoid that the un-flush bevel means it'll fall off and the squishy button means it'll stop working just past the warranty or something. It seems like I have a delay when pressing the home button but I have to assume my mind is playing tricks on me at this point.

my bezel is a little raised on the right too. It's not a big deal, but I can feel it. Personally, I am Ok with it (though I'd prefer it to be perfect) and will live with it. But if these things drive you nuts, then do yourself a favor and get it replaced now - just realize it may not be easy to get a "perfect" iphone.

Yea, the bevel isn't as big a deal, I think I've decided to stick this thing in an Otterbox anyways. Dropped it today already, I'm so used to having a "ruggedized" flip phone that I can barely hang on to this thing.

My wife asked a girl at the Apple store today and she said they wouldn't exchange it for the "squishy" home button issue so I guess it would depend on which specialist I got and how stubborn I was about the issue.

The home button is my big concern. Guess I'll head to the Apple store tomorrow and play with the display models to compare. I'll admit to being a little OCD about stuff like this especially on a $323 device.
