I have waited for 1 month to get the MBP....As I'm moving back to Bazil, I had to quit yesterday...It won't get here until saturday (when I'm leaving)....

I REALLY WANT a MAC.... It'd be my very first one....

I'll be doing: Office, internet, light photo/video... So, I'm wondering if I should buy a PB 15'' and go back happy knowing that I got a nice machine for my needs that should last 2-3 years......

OR

OPTION: Get a PC.....I just got a HP 5000 z (2.2 AMD, 2gb RAM, 100/7200, 15.4 brightview...) It's a nice computer for 1400$...I'll have my work done and performancewise it is at least the same as BP.....But doesn't have all the bells and whilstles and It's not a mac.......

HELP ME!!!

Can you order a MacBook Pro to have delivered in Brazil?

The Powerbooks are not bad, but since the MacBook is now available.

If you love Macs, you shouldn't get a PC.

I would get a PB its still a great computer and will last a long time. The only way I would buy an HP is if you were to have linux running on it. But thats just me. I really like Apple hardware as well.

But really its your call. I have a old ibook and it makes really happy. So a PB intel or not would be great IMO.

Maybe I could but I'd pay 60% of import tax...WAY TOOOO MUCH!

It's not that I "love" macs...It's gonna be my VERY FISTS one!!! I'd just wanted to get rid of windows.....

So hard to tell you what to do. It seems like a really tough situation to be in.

Tough situation? it's been even harder than the one I was when i had to decide to get married or not!!!

Honestly, idk.

I mean i am assuming that they don't sell Mac's in Brazil if you need to buy it here? Or is it cheaper here? Because if there is no appple support there, i would deffinetly not buy one. At best, maybe, maybe i'd get a refurb ibook, just to surf the web, documents, music, etc..

:)

We have macs there but it is prohibitively overpriced!! It's like paying 10.000$ for a machine....We do have support....It's not awesome...but we have...If there's a big issue they send it to USA and takes weeks...but works.....

I'm planning to buy a 12" PB this week. Granted, I only intend to keep it for about a year, but it will do exactly what I need it to do for a while. No worries here. Go for it! Better yet, try to find one on sale or something. Even if you have to pay for overnight shipping, might be worth it.

Why not order it, have it shipped to a friend in the USA, then have them ship it to you marked as a gift?
Some countries make you declare the value of even gifts... I believe the UK does this. And if you lie about the value (for example, say it's $100) and then something happens in transit, you are only covered for the declared value.

As to the original question: No, you're not crazy to buy a G4 PowerBook. The thing will be good for YEARS and it has the distinct advantage of actually being able to run ALL Mac software without emulation... right now, a MacBook Pro is gonna have to use Rosetta for a lot of the non-Apple software you might want to run on it (e.g., Microsoft Office).

In your situation I'd probably buy a refurb iBook At the Apple store. There going for $799, and it's basically good as new. The difference in processing power b/w this and the powerbook is negligible at best, especially for your stated needs. This would give you a low-cost entry into the Mac world, where you could get your feet wet while learning OS X.

Maybe you can pick up a MacBook, in the future, and sell the iBook for close to what you paid for it. I just can't imagine personally spending that much money on a powerbook now, when its "thoroughly" outclassed by it's replacment, in pretty much every category.

iBook

If you are going to get a G4 portable then get an iBook, refurbished if possible. Try to see if another 3rd party seller has the MBP in and can ship overnight.

don't listen to the people on here who tell you the G4 is slow and will only last a year. I use one of these every single day, and with all i demand from it, it is by no means slow, just not as fast as a MBP, but that doesn't make it any slower. ;)

just be sure to put in the obligatory ram upgrade.

Definitely go for a refurb iBook!
I've bought one a few hours ago for $799 and it's awesome for my basic needs... granted, maybe the two/three years you are quoting are a little stretched but it'll do the job just fine.

go to an apple store buy a macbook pro, they are comming in stock all over the place.

Could you get a friend to receive and ship it to you with a lower declared value? Or pick it up on a trip in a few months?
