am i doing something wrong?? need help!

hi guys & gals,

bought myself an ipad yesterday and i was putting some of my itunes hd movies on it. now here's the question: when i want to look at them in full screen i noticed that it doesnt fit exactly in the screen (a fair bit of the movie is out of the screen on all sides).
can this be fixed in some sort of settings or something because ive tried everything but didn't found a solution yet, and i dont want to look at movies with black bars on such a beautiful device.
please don't kill me if my english is not correct cause i'm dutch.

any help would be appreciated.

If your movie is recorded in widescreen then that's what your seeing.

I have several movies (all from iTunes) and they all will play full screen.

er zijn maar twee mogelijkheden om naar films te kijken:
full screen, of origineel formaat.

de zwarte balken ligt aan het formaat van de originele film of serie, 16:9 / 4:3, als je met het originele formaat toch het gehele beeld zou willen zien dan wordt het beeld vervormd.

i double tapped the screen. that's when all my movies go out of the screen a bit. what i see with the black bars is not what i see double tapped if you know what i mean.

Well, there's no other way to view it, then. You can either see the entire picture and have the black bars, or zoom it in so that the sides are cut off. There is no other way to do this, unless you want to squash/stretch the picture, but this isn't supported by the iPad and shouldn't be what you want anyway. (This would produce a distorted picture)

You need to learn about aspect ratios. How could the sides of the picture be on the screen if you zoom it up. The screen has an aspect ratio of 1.33 and HDTV is 1.78. Just like you can't evenly fit a squire peg in a round hole you can't evenly fit a 1.78 (or 1.85 or 2.35) picture on a 1.33 screen.

As Julien says, the files are simply not the right aspect ratio for the iPad maybe using some programme it can be converted, but my guess is that is gonna effect the quality.

So you are requesting that they make movies in 4x3 format so they will fit on the iPad.

Or are you requesting that there be an option to show the movie in anamorphic mode, which would fill the 4x3 screen with the entire picture, but everyone will be squished tall and skinny??

The iPad screen is 4:3 (1.33:1). Widescreen movies are either 1.78:1, 1.85:1 or 2.35:1. Show me how you would like them to fit without either black bars at the top & bottom or cutting off the sides.

This issue has been widely discussed from the time the iPad was announced at the beginning of this year, so much so that I got tired of hearing it way before the iPad was available for pre-order. In the future, it would be best to do some research into products you are interested in before purchase.

Is this a joke? Even movies you watch in the theatre are not the same on an old-fashioned full-screen tv. It's been that way for years, decades! The ipad's aspect ratio is the same as a full-screen tv. It's not a widescreen iPad. That's why the black bars appear, to simulate a widescreen.
